Biggest drawback to having dedicated winter tires in snowy climates.

Definitely has to be other people driving on their bald seasons while im out trying to actually go places, and or even worse is the occasional nutjob that thinks uhp summer tires will be ok if they just drive extra careful.

    stay at home plz. thx!

I got a ticket for to fast for conditions for passing a cop on a highway. he was going 3 behind 3 slow cars in the right lane. The leading car was a 350Z that could not keep the car going straight. This gentleman was clearly was on bald tires in 3 inches of snow. I am driving my B5s4 with fresh snows. I cautiously move into the unplowed left lane and sped up to around 45. passed everyone then got back into the right lane and sped up to 55 or so with complete confidence. nearly 2 miles later after exiting the highway I get caught at a stop light and the cop lights me up and gives me a ticket. Going on about how great his expedition is in the snow and he could not keep up with me I was going so fast. He commented that he was not sure if I was trying to evade him. I was extremely pissed off but I am always polite to officers took my ticket and got it dropped to parking no points.

First decent snow of the season in the Twin Cities this morning. And snow is one of the reasons I bought an Audi. The S4 with proper snows is so much fun to drive. Of course I must admit my commute to work is 10 miles of mostly back roads and thus I don't have to deal with the freeways that are clogged with traffic. Passed a little Ford Escort with CA plates that did not brush the 4 inches of snow off. Come on people brush your cars off, it is the law, but more importantly so that you can see and people can see your head/tail-lights.

Amen. You have a car that can go 55 on the highway conservatively but you can't go anywhere cause everyone else is stuck spinning tires and spinning in a circle like a schitszu at the bottom of every mild incline. DOH!!!

This!! My biggest thing is when driving behind cars with 8" of snow on their roofs. Needless to say I stay far far behind them.

Also I too am worried when I see a rear wheel drive squad car going 20 or so mph and here I am like ok I have Quattro and snow tires... Should I take the chance!? Haven't got a ticket yet!

Tomorrow will be the true test as thats when we are supposed to get actual accumulation. I just put on brand new snows on 3 days ago and cut right through the minimal slop this morning.

When someone doesn't clear the snow from the roof of their car and proceeds to drive around with it, looking like the rooftop luggage of the old days.

Steve: It's not snowing anymore, where is all this coming from?

This is the biggest issue. Quattro with snows is nearly unstoppable, but here in the DC area where we get so little snow that people dont bother changing tires makes driving in the snow a scary thing.

That is why this year I decided to not submit the S4 to such dangers and got a new set of snow tires:

definitely unacceptable to not scrape the snow off of your car before driving! i would really like to see this enforced 100% by law enforcement, but im not sure it actually is, i see it waay too much...

true story i was driving behind this lady a few years ago after a big storm, you cant make this stuff up! its a vw beetle if you are wondering i would have called the cops if i had more time.

Not sure on what the fine was for this ticket, but if large enough to warrant a trip to court, I would go and have it tossed. "Too fast for conditions" is subjective. If you were following the speed limit and did not cause an accident, you should not be ticketed.

LOL I got pulled over for that once when I was in my Mazda Speed 3 with Blizzaks. That little car would go through piles of snow without issue. I was in the far left lane on the freeway and there was a cop in the far right. Traffic was mild and I eventually made my way over to exit. He didn't get me until I was at my destination/store. I actually busted his chops as I was hardly going "too fast" Just faster than all the old ladies and was in complete control; not to mention I had 20yrs on him and grew up in NY and Cleveland with piles of snow.

He decided to "let me go" with a warning.

lol I feel you with Cleveland. I grew up in Cleveland (and live there again), but there was a time when I was in the Air Force that I was driving out in northern California and it sprinkled. People were acting like it was the apocalypse (literally cleaning off grocery store shelves and buying every jacket available). I was driving down the highway around the speed limit in a 2005 Cobalt (new-ish at the time, but with Blizzaks on it that I got on sale) and got pulled over. The guy was like "First off, you shouldn't be out in this if you don't have anywhere important to be. Secondly, you're driving way too fast." I was wearing a hoody and tennis shoes, told him I was from Cleveland, and he said good luck and walked back to his car haha

One of the reasons why I kept the ancient Audi 90 - perfect snow car. I don't give two craps if it gets a dent from a moron. It's accumulated several over the years of being parked in ski area parking lots..
    1993 Audi 90 Quattro 2.8 5MT - Sold with 245,000 miles on it.
2002 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 3.0 6MT - Retired commuter, Dog Car, Costco runner, Snowmobile.
2014 Audi S4 Quattro Sport Diff 6MT - Daily Driver. CR-15, Chipwerke, minor cosmetic mods. Eventually I'll get around to the audio build.

Not sure if I agree. The speed limit is set at ideal conditions I don't think a judge would agree with going 55 in a snow storm

It is more about safety of yourself and other drivers. They don't care if you have awd with winters.

We're in average snow country here and I've never felt the need for snows with AWD. That's coming from a Subaru, so I hope the S4 is as capable in snow as my old car was.

It's not that you "need" snow tires. But it's one of those things that when you get them, you realize what you have been missing and can't believe you waited this long to try snow tires out.

I like to play in the snow as much as anyone. There is no comparison between snow tires and all seasons. It's not just the extra traction, it's also the added control you get when you purposefully lose traction. You can control your slide and power through it, where all seasons don't give you the same kind of forward momentum you need to continue with longer drifts. Donut speed is greater, and radius is smaller with snow tires as well.

My favorite donutting moment in my A4:

Be careful, that's a serious felony. (False imprisonment).

If you did time, people would presume you raped someone because it's a precursor to rape, and often rape is pleaded down to FI.

    LOL

bit of an extreme example tho. do you think that if someone called the cops on the lady in the blue vw beetle, and maybe blocked her into a parking spot or somehow tried to stop that car from driving because it was a safety issue due to no visiblity, that once a cop got there and he saw the car, he would lock the person up for false imprisonment?

and even if they did for some reason the individual might get in trouble and go to court they would never see the inside of a prison cell, where any potential label "false imprisonment" might lead to less than favorable living conditions.

    LOL

Yup. Way cheaper wheels and way cheaper tires. Plus, they're generally a bit thinner, which performs better.

yes it is awd, my wife will not drive anything but!

honestly i havent driven it in the snow yet since we just got our first snow of the year a few days ago and didnt have the opportunity to go out and toss it around...it has all seasons on it right now, and my s4 has hakka r2s, so im going to assume the audi is more competent, but i might get snow tires for the genesis too, i will just have to wait til it snows again and take it out and see how it does.
