What does stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3 mean

    A. They are awesome cars.

    B. They earned their reputation. If you don't have deep pockets or a strong mechanical ability, with resources to yank the driveline out for random bits, then look elsewhere. If you don't know what a driveline is, look elsewhere.

    C. Craigslist, or here.

    D. Stock + tune, tune plus exhaust, bigger turbos.

    E. That's entirely up to you. The price ranges widely based off a number of factors.

I figured I would give him answers, even though his questions already told me he is no where near ready for this kind of life.

I agree, but honestly starting out with a car like this is like getting a pit bull for a first puppy. It will be fun, at first, but will end with you bit and the dog dead.

It's hard too find anything under 120k in miles. How many miles is too much

I wouldn't worry about mileage. Lots of high mileage stage 3 and up cars. These things break small shit, but stand the test of time if maintained.

Thank you for all the answers

It seems like all b5's eventually need their timing belt and water pump done, if it is not already done how much does it cost to repair

Should be the first thing you do when you buy one, unless of course you have receipts showing the work done recently. Honestly, expect to put in alot of hours and $ getting the car where it should be. That is unless you throw some serious coin, well maintenance b5 s4's aren't cheap. Within 3 mo of buying mine I had to put a motor in it, food for thought. Be prepared for atleast 1500 off the bat if you buy one that isn't quite up to par

If you have decent mechanical skills and a good set of tools, timing belt and water pump can be done for about $350 with a kit and then youll need a cam lock bar. https://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_S4--2.7T/ES2762570/ If not.. well the cost will be up there.

Cam lock bar is debatable, I didn't use one myself but it depends on how confident you are.

Back when I was turning wrenches, I would charge around 5.5-6 hours for timing belt packages on non turbo b5 v6's. I imagine it's a little more on the S4.

Don't give people especially who are new to this platform bad advice. Cam lock bar is definitely mandatory to properly do a timing belt on these engines. You can pick them up for $30 on ebay with a crank lock pin. You need the cam lock bar in order to apply full tension to timing belt after tensioner is released and cam pullies are still loose before tightening them to get perfect alignment. This is how you'll get both banks identical in block 93 in Vagcom. It is impossible to eye ball this if that's what you're doing. Crank lock pin is not as mandatory as long as the crank pulley mark is lined up with the arrow at TDC.

Auditrackspeed that imola is gorgeous! I would definitely buy that if I lived closer to you. Why are you selling it?

Let me clarify, if you aren't changing cam seals, a bar isn't needed. If you don't remove the cam pulleys, then you certainly can "eyeball" it.

    Better?

Side note, I don't change cam seals unless I'm doing a rebuild or I find them leaking, just personal preference.

i had 147k on my silver with f21s in it and i loved that car it kills me everyday that i sold it. car was amazing tank in the snow didnt break rarely at all did general maintenance it was awesome untill i figured i should grow up a bit and stop daily driving a race car lol @ mk6 gti
i still have my hibiscus though with stock turbos auto trans and 187k running perfect. theres slight signs that the head gasket may be eating coolant but with 187k miles and the only major service being timing belt and motor seals how can one complain.
ill be buying another one this spring. like others have said though if you a dont have money or b cant work on your own car. dont buy one the parts are fairly pricey and so is labor. even doing it your self can push your ability to not push the car out the garage and light it on fire at times.......lol ask me how i know, either way there great cars but understand there 15 years old most of them and it wont be like buying a 2014 with 1000 miles on the clock some will run another 60k before something gets old some will make it 20k
    01 s4 f21 on meth sold
00 s4 hibiscus six speed swap pj ko4
    00 allroad pj ko4
