Amber Side Marker Removal and Painting

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Since i'm a cheap guy by nature, i decided to paint my own side markers. Just bought a can of OEM paint colour from paintscratch and then some clearcoat from home depot.

I haven't seen a removal process anywhere, but it's pretty easy actually. Just push the plastic fender under the reflector and get a small screwdriver in there and pop it outwards, voila.

Then a few coats of paint and a few more clear coats. Done. Easiest mod so far.

I don't think anyone can match exactly the paint from the manufacturer done that day your car was made.
That said, this should be pretty close and looks it from what i can tell so far.
Will post pics when done. Just doing clear coat now :)

If you take your gas filler lid to an autobody paint supply shop they use a scanner to get the exact color. They can make you an aerosol can of that color. Works great for small projects.

Thanks for sharing, I will pop them out and ask my dad to do the paint when he comes to visit me next month. He is better than me at that stuff and he will be bored when I'm out to work anyway lol

I did purchase metallic painted side markers (4x) from the now defunct OEMPlus. They had matched my Panther Black paint without ever seeing the car as perfectly as I could expect possible. Not sure how they did such a great job!

Oh yeah, and if I were to do it again I would probably keep the red markers in the back, and maybe just go to white front side markers, cause my car is really very dark :)

I wouldn't say it's a perfect match, but close enough that you can't tell.
    Certainly much improved over orange!

I would be happy with clear front and rear side markers. Nice to know they pop out so easily.

Super easy actually, i was quite surprised. Most of the time my mods take 3 times longer than anticipated. :)

Looks awesome. Car is so clean. Now just wrap the bottom part of the side view mirrors black and your all set.

If you don't want to risk damaging the paint, lock your wheels out to one side and remove the four screws from the fender liner and pop them out from the inside.

I could barely fit my hand behind the rear reflector, but since they were red I left them alone. Anybody know how to get at those for future?

    This!

I'm getting mine Thursday soooo they will go in right away.

So front pop out from the outside is that the consensus???? And, sane for rear??? Has someone find this from inside the liner??? Is that better.... Let me know going to do this right away .

Thanks for your post! I went ahead and did this for my 2012 A7. Since it's black, I used Rustoleum Flexidip and glossifer that was available locally. Not quite the same gloss, but beats the heck out of the stock markers. Might eventually use matching paint and do it again, but for now, this is great. Both front and back markers popped out just as you described for the front.

This is probably the one picture that shows the biggest contrast in gloss between the marker and the body.

It's hard to even see in most pictures.

It seems so natural, I have to go back and look at an older picture to remind me of how jarring the orange markers were.
