    Allroad 4.2 V8 swap

I've done some light searching but haven't found anything conclusive on this topic.

I'm toying with the idea of buying a 6spd allroad and swapping in a timing belt 4.2 V8 in place of the 2.7T.

I owned a 4.2 C5 A6 for about 4 years before I got my current A4 Avant. I'm very familiar with the timing belt 4.2 engine and liked the power combined with V8 sound. . Naturally, after owning the A4 Avant for 2 years, the allroad is next step for me as my family is growing.

Will the 4.2 timing belt engine fit in the allroad? I know the 4.2 body is wider than the regular A6. I'm thinking of looking for an 01 6spd with a blown engine and vice versa as there are plenty of 4.2s with blown trans around. Staying with 01 and older I won't have to mess with immo

Does anyone know of any 4.2 allroad swaps?

And no, I don't want a chain 4.2 engine found in the later allroads

won't you have a problem with trying to put in a several inch longer engine into a space that's smaller and got specifically designed for shorter chain driven engine? Nothing's impossible, it just sounds like it won't be a simple drop...

I know some people have been able to fit the 4.2 into an A4, but as I'm doing more research the 4.2 A6 is longer also, so like you said this definitely wouldn't be plug and play

The 077 series (belt-driven) 4.2 V8 40V motor WILL fit the 2001 Allroad just fine. If the motor comes from a 2000/2001 C5, it WILL be plug and play.

Don't be too concerned with the length - the C5 non-V8 has a longer engine bay than the B5 A4, yet the B5 will accept the 077 series V8 AND still retain aircon.

Factory 6mt allroad gearing sucks on the V6, and it will suck even more on the V8. Consider buying an allroad with a blown automatic for cheaps and doing a 6mt swap with better gearing.

Scotty's right there. The Allroad manual is pretty low geared, more suited to slow negotiation of rough terrain. More like a crawl box.

The standard S4/A6 01E gearing is better.
