    '02 A6 3.0 Q. Oil Press Warning, What Now?

Hello all, looking for some advice.

Recently (2 weeks ago) acquired 02 A6, auto, Q with 3.0 v6. 130k miles. I have only driven it for a total 80 miles, about 70 of them on highway, 60-75 mph. After bedding new rear brake pads/rotors, about a mile and a half from home, the Oil press warning came on and as I was pulling off the road, within 30 seconds, the engine quit running.

Got it towed home on a rollback. Timing belt is intact, engine will turn over and start, noisy, so I immediately shut it off. Drained oil, removed filter, and pulled oil pan. Some sludge in the bottom, strained oil, found NO metal, just crud.

So where do I go from here??

I figure I will probably have to pull the motor anyway, and I am finding used motors from $1200-2000. A rebuilt for $3000+.

Is there a better motor to put in? Like is an '03 or '04 motor better than the '02? What about the 3.2 v6? Is that swappable?

    Thanks

    All Over!

Forget the 3.2 swap, unless you want to mess around with FSI.

All 3.0 V6 motors are compatible, none are particularly more reliable than the other.

Thanks NW, I will pull the plugs and valve covers today to take a look. My "Audi Specialist" is in the middle of a 2 week hunting trip out west.

Depending what I find, what is consensus on replacing with a salvage yard motor versus repairing mine. Cams, valve/head work, pistons/rings, oil pump, gaskets, etc. Some of the motors come with 30 day and up to 12 month warranties IF you replace a bunch of components AND professional installation.

    Thoughts?
