Is it normal to see some motor oil along the edges of the valve cover? See pic below.

Mine looks the same. Not losing any significant oil volume but, yeah, it's there.

If you are concerned about it, clean part of it with Brakleen or something and keep an eye on it.

Wanted to know if this is related to the PCV recall I received from the AOA. Having it serviced next week. I have no symptoms or error codes, no oil loss (drive low miles and change my oil every 6 months).

Mine is like that as well, it's from the oil fill neck on mine. It looks like it's firmly attached but it only rests on the valve cover so that when you fill the oil and spill a bit it slowly flows all over the place. Our engines don't have a traditional valve cover gasket its only a liquid gasket.

Like every b8 I have ever seen. I hate it, but it seems common.

No matter what, that shit will seep. And replacing it is a major bitch because the valve cover is also the cam cover, unlike a traditional valve cover.

The cam cover should not leak or seep. Mine is still spotless. While the leakage may be very small and not overly bothersome, the cover is meant to be sealed and should not leak.

Mine has it too. I was going to change it until I learned that the valve cover is also holding the cams down. The process to change it is not like the old days.

It's gonna stay. I'm not taking that apart.

I will find out next week if they are going to address this issue when I go in to have my PCV checked due to that recall letter I received.

Ditto here. I thought that it was caused by the time my OCC lines froze and pressure buildup causing a leak, but maybe not...

Sorry to bump, but did anybody get this fixed via warranty work?

    I have the same on a 2014 A4 with 35k

I brought it to their attention during the PCV recall fix that was performed. SA said its a seepage and not a leak. They just took note of it just in case it gets worse. I will clean an area and see if it comes back because the PCV was fixed and I'm hoping that it was just too much pressure causing the oil to seep.

If it bothers you, spray some simple green around the cover and wash it away after 5 mins. The engine should be cool.

It didn't bother me that much. Since I was in for 35k service, if it was a warranted issue, I would want it fixed. The dealership cleaned it and said will monitor next time I come in. Odd that they said my VIN didn't require the PCV campaign.
    Thanks

That's because your complaint is unrelated to the PCV

A leak, seap, weap, should never be considered "normal" in 2016.....either a seal is busted, or installed incorrectly. I'm new to Audi, but I find it hard to believe that the EPA would be fine with an automaker allowing the engine to weap

I think that's normal leakage from the filler neck "seal". It seems to be resting above the gasket in pockets as well as if dripped from above. I clean my engine in spring so mine looks like this as well right now.

Sry to bring this thread back to life but I have a 2014 A5 2.0t and this is exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully the people seeing this find this thread.

    IMG_6429.jpg IMG_6428.jpg IMG_6430.jpg

I was told this was common and not to worry about it. I think our cars (at least mine) don't have a valve cover gasket. It's only the valve cover, which also holds the cams in place I believe. Taking the valve cover off to fix this issue is very time consuming and will cost a good amt of money. The "gasket" is just a sealant inside the valve cover, which is the most likely culprit. It's a bad design tbh but I was advised to not bother fixing it unless or until it becomes an actual leak. This may also never develop into a full blown leak. I drove my car hard for 2 years after noticing this and the amount of oil seepage stayed the same. I tried liqui moly motor oil savor one year the seepage completely stopped for a long time, which is weird since there's no actual gasket. The car says I haven't been losing any oil so we shall see how this goes. If anyone has any updates on this it would be really helpful to others with the same issue in other models as well (if it's really even an issue).

Reading thru this a couple of things come to mind. 1 you can clean it and keep an eye of where you see seepage. 2 check the upper timing cover gasket that’s a simple fix and those get hard on a fast time like 5-6 yrs or ~50k mi seepage from upper timing cover can blow back on the cam tray looking like the cam tray is leaking. And maybe upper timing cover the 5 10mm bolts check there tightness. And worst case if it’s the anaerobic sealant that’s leaking that’s a fun job.. it’s possible this car had head removed for a piston job? And sealant job wasn’t done correctly.. and finally it’s possibly the pvc breather regardless of Audi TSBs those will fail at 50-60k mi

Thank you so much for the info. My car hasn't had any engine work done to it. In fact it only has 28k miles on it. The next time I take it to the shop I'll ask the tech there about the upper timing cover gasket and the bolt tightness. That actually might be it, you're a genius. The oil is closer to the timing cover as well so that's most likely the case. PCV most likely isn't the issue due to the lack of mileage on the car but who knows. Either way it's not giving me any problems or drinking any oil...yet

Perfect little video specifically about what you said: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dtoM_I0zTFg

*UPDATE: the techs I talked to said it's extremely unlikely that the cam/valve cover itself would leak as the sealant is usually never a problem in the b8.5 models. Since the oil looks to be closer to the front, the only explanation seems to be the upper timing chain gasket. This requires the replacement of the upper timing chain cover.

    Thank you mrg_B8TFSi
