Getting frustrated with this, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
2003 A4 1.8t quattro 5spd. No issues with starting in the past, but got in car this past sunday morning, and it wouldn't start. Cranks fine, the odd stumble, but no start. It was around - 1 C that morning, snowed overnight. I'm not sure if this is temperature related, so I'm going to include that info as well.
1. Monday - Checked codes with VCDS, had the following:
- Random misfires
- Misfire on Cyl #3
- Thermostat sensor (Recurring code, Thermostat was replaced last Feb, no issues since then)
Took battery out to get tested, parts store says battery is no good, so I buy a replacement, and install. Still cranks fine, but no start. Temp was -2 C, a bit of snow. Give up and decide to get car towed to shop.
2. Tuesday - Call shops in town, none available until next Tuesday due to snow tire installs, great!
3. Wednesday - get home from work with a borrowed fuel pressure tester, determined to get to the bottom of this, put on the work clothes, and try to start car before diagnostic work. Car starts fine, so I let it run for 10 minutes. Problem solved I think, must have been the battery and I didn't stick with it long enough. +3 C, dry.
4. Thurs (this morning) +7 C and rainy - cranks but no start. *&%$!
What I know:
-Fuel pump gets noisy when it's cold out (below zero C / 32F) which was leading me towards the fuel pump being on the way out / clogged fuel filter.
-I can hear the pump prime when I turn the key to ACC, assuming this combined with the fact it started yesterday means relay is fine.
-Crank position sensor I'm assuming is fine if it started yesterday
Would a faulty coolant temp sensor cause this type of no-start? I'm at a loss - I need to get this car back on the road ASAP.
