    I don't know a lot about this engine but I would start by taking off the head cover and check
    camshaft and rockers. One of my friends took it off at work and it's an easy job.

    Sounds like a diesel...Oh wait

    Unfortunately, not many people have the EU diesel (1.9/2.0) version of B7s so I doubt you will get an answer BUT, do you guys have a cam chain + tensioner? That sound is very very similar to the sound of a bad cam chain tensioner on a 2.0 petrol car...
