    JHM, APR, GIAC tunes. Insight?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,
I have done a few searchers but there does not seem to be a "head to head" comparison of the tunes from the last few years. My question is simple, do we have a preferred flash as of the last few years? They all seem to be close price wise, and it seems like JHM is the most active on the forums as of late, so I think the responses my be biased in their direction, but that might be fine. I am not looking so mush for HP gains, more for throttle response. FYI I only have cat-back and K&N. Thanks for any info in advance.

Ill make it short and sweet. I've had all 3....

My first b6 TIP I started to mod with what was available and that I thought was the best...

    Milltek catback
    Milltek DP
    GIAC tune

Sounded great butt dyno loved it at first--that is until I went another route and more info came public...

Years later as the platform grew JHM came along and I cant thank them enough... I eventually did a little overhaul and installed JHM headers + FI catback + JHM Tune. My goodness what a difference..words can only can go so far. Yes I know the headers wake the car up from the dead but holy smokes...

Sold that car and found myself back into another b6 6mt--it was tastefully modded with full 2.5 DP/catback etc. It however had the APR tune. COugh cough car feels pretty much exactly how my first stock b6 did when I bought it in 2006--to think APR or even GIAC claim X amount on the dyno is mind boggling. Heck even the throttle response was fucking garbage...

Moral of story call up JHM-- I've tried it all intakes + tunes + 2.25 exhaust and I may not have data or videos to back it up as this was years ago when the platform was still growing but JHM is by far ahead of the game in this particular platform no fucking joke...

FWIW and totally just my opinion - The JHM tune is a little too touchy on the throttle input for my liking, reminded me of my old E46 M3 with the 'sport' button pushed. If you like an aggressive throttle tip in then it would be a great option for you; it's just not my cup of tea as I prefer a more linear input.

I have NOT driven or owned a B6/7 S4 with a tune other than stock or JHM so I can't say how it compares to the other choices.

Agreed, I have had a JHM tune for around a year now and I hate the throttle tip in sensitivity more and more everyday.

My car is an auto so it makes it super jerky in stop and go unless I make a conscious effort to be smooth.

    Doesn't JHM claim a 1:1 pedal/throttle ratio?

Really?? Do you drive it in sport constantly? I drive my car everyday in auto and it’s as smooth as butter. In fact, it can be too ‘laid back’ at times using just the torque to accelerate rather than change down a cog, but twitchy when you want to drive it hard or with a purpose in sport mode.
It’s also very easy to control the throttle response in manual too.

I’ve been driving for 30 years, I’m trained in Emergency Response Driving and competed a little, but that can’t account for the driving experience or throttle control alone.
    I have the 91 tune.

No, I almost never drive in sport mode. I am annoyed by driving around with the RPM always at 4k. It does make the car drive better minus the tip in which is seems to have no effect on.

If I'm in a situation where I come to a stop for a brief time and begin accelerating again if I am not careful when I get back on the gas the thing will snap everyone in the cars head back including my own. It's annoying.

What I think is happening is the tcu sees a more abrupt increase and it thinks "here we go!!" and locks up the torque converter.

Either way I dislike it heavily and I am going to fix it by changing the car over to a 6mt.

When I bought the car I didn't want a 6mt but I feel like the tip in this car is robbing it of its peppyness...

There is a big "cushion" I guess you can say in the stock mapping that makes the throttle very weak when taking off for "driver comfort". Most people get used to this, and don't understand it when we remove it. Just need to learn how to control the pedal with your ankle and taking off can be smooth again. I came from a built 73 Camaro before getting my first Audi, so I was used to the type of throttle pretty much immediately.

The car has a V8. When you stab the pedal down a 1/4 of the way when trying to take off, the car is going to want to go.

Yeah, well, 1st gear slow speed driving over rough terrain is still pretty tricky. Sphincter to toe, you'd better be clinched tight or you're bound to be launched into something. I looked into developing a filter circuit that could be turned on and off, but I realized the liability for modifying the throttle system was beyond my comfort level.

Have you tried shifting into 2nd for those scenarios?

Good call on the filter, lol.

Remove the pre-cats from your downpipes or buy the "piggies" ($295), and get the cat-back exhaust ($1,095). Then add the JHM tune ($595). You may need the flashing cable if you decide to flash at home ($150).

Not really sure what you are talking about with the JHM tune and throttle tip. Mine (piggies, 91 tune, tiptronic) behaves nothing like what you describe; hmmm.
