Build up on valves and pistons

Ok another head question. Just took my head off today and noticed cylinder 1 and 4 have flaky stuff while 2 and 3 look normal to me.

Reason for removing head was due to the famous misfire cold start in cyl 2 and others, combustion smell in overflow tank, white puffs out exhaust while misfiring, coolant marks on top turbo exhaust manifold near the 3 bolts, and according to PO records it had mentions of overhearing.

Soo what causes that flaky stuff? leaky stem seals? It's also on the piston tops but again only on 1&4

    Thanks

White residue is from dried out coolant. When my head had a leak from a pin hole,it left white everywhere. Exhaust manifold l, inside the turbo , inside the cat, the port in the head and a little on valves. If that's what what you're speaking of ,its coolant. The black is carbon.

Why is furly commenting on inferior engine platforms? Thought it was 2.7 ftw or bust? Lol
But to me those valves look fairly decent. They indicate a lean condition however even combustion. I wouldn't worry too much about the white flsky stuff unless you have more info you would like to share about other symptoms.

Cylinders 2 and 3 are clean because of the coolant that was leaking into them kept them steamcleaned, the other two are very normal and actually alot cleaner than they should be, these engines run very dirty, most 5 valve engines in fact do.
