    Windshield protection

Recently I was making a drive up to Denver and managed to get 3 big rock chips in my windshield. I would have thought the S5 windshield was at an angle where it wouldn't get beat to all hell, but it's proving to eat up rocks more-so than most of my previous cars. With that said, what do some of you do for windshield protection? I know there's a few different products out there, but I've never personally had any type of vinyl or coating on my windshields to reduce the chance of chips and cracks.

On past cars, my windshields were cheap and not worth protecting, so even living in Colorado I haven't previously found any value in vinyl or ceramic coating. Which products are cost efficient while not reducing visibility or adding glare?

My auto insurance has always had glass coverage. Usually can get them to replace windshield at no cost if any kind of crack develops from chip. Sometimes can even get them to replace for just a chip and no crack, depending on how bad it is. Most times there is no pre-inspection, just a phone call to insurance agent and they send someone to replace on site. They do take the old windshield with them so there may be some follow up on that end as far as the damage is concerned.

Probably going to be a waste of time. The mag chloride on the roads corrodes everything so bad, you are just better off running with a f*cked windshield through the winter and having it replaced in the spring. My insurance always covered one windshield per year as a part of their glass coverage.

I've always avoided glass coverage due to how ineffective it was to me in the past, but I might have to consider it on this car. In the 9 or so years I had the STI I only ever replaced the windshield once, and that was just because it eventually took too many small rocks that it just didn't look nice. It never cracked or had any major chips, just thousands of small marks after about 7 or 8 years of use.

I think the windshields on some of the newer cars are thinner and therefore more crack prone. I drove my 91 Stealth for 300k miles and had no rock chips, first few months in the A5 and huge chip!
