So background, was driving home Saturday night. The day started off raining, and as I get closer to home at night, in the snow belt, it turned to an icy snow mess (Quattro weather). The build up in the lane no one uses, but Quattro's grin in, had large wheel tracks from people leaving it for a more pure ice surface then a much nicer snowy surface you can stop on.
Sunday I drove around and at low speeds you don't hear anything, but as you get up around 60 km/h (40 mph) you can start hearing a noise much like baseball cards in the spokes of your bicycle as a kid. I dropped by my shop I go to, and we cleared ice out that was stuck, the noise is still there and it sounds a bit metallic. It doesn't make the noise when the car is sitting and it's not coming from the engine.
Any other suggestions to look for? The rotor shields seem pretty solid to have gotten bent but appeared ok. Anyone have problems with brake pads coming lose? I have over 5,000 km on these pads, seems unusual. Was a Google suggestion and worth looking. Doesn't really sound like a wheel bearing as that tends to be a more solid noise. Drivetrain that I should look closer at? Just time of year (short days), cold / snow / ice, make it something I just want to jack the car up, put the stands down and quickly poke around with for an hour and not more.
