    Swap to 2001 A4 1.8T from xxxxx

How difficult is it to swap a 1.8T engine into a 2.8 car?
What needs to be changed (obviously: engine harness)?

How difficult to make the ECU/engine harness 'talk' to instrument cluster and other modules? Coding nightmare?

Looking to end up with a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T quattro manual. Some potential donor cars are 2001 A4 2.8.

If both cars are the same year, give or take +/- (ME7) you should be okay. The only coding required would be the instrument cluster for correct tacho calibration.

Not if V6 is using same ECU.
Car side ECU plugs (those 5 or so colorful plugs under the ECU box) the same?
Harness itself obviously needs to be swapped in from 2001 1.8T car.

It would be cheaper to find a 1.8t. And easier. They are everywhere.

    A mess.
    Location

You need to swap the radiator carrier, radiator, a/c lines, p/s lines, harness, fuel lines, engine, intercooler, vacuum reservoir, exhaust and harness. The interior plugs do not match up, so some re-pinning will be needed (the ECU will not be powered). The cluster was easy to recode as was the ABS. Since I needed to change my heater core and also did a 6sp manual swap at the same time, I pulled the entire harness from the donor car.

Both cars were 01 B5 Passats, but mine was a V6 4Motion and the other was a 1.8T FWD 5sp. I used an S4 6sp trans with a driveshaft spacer as the Passat was never sold with a 6sp 4MO setup in the US apart from the W8. Car is quicker than before even with the 150hp motor stock, it's also almost 200lbs lighter up front and mileage has jumped 5mpg.

Yup. Figured. Clearly: find 1.8t with busted engine.

Wow. That's a big effort. Too much for my intentions. Will stick with finding matching donor car for one on one swap of engine. I.e. 2001 a4 1.8t quattro manual, busted engine or tranny. In Michigan or close.

It's honestly not that bad, everything you need to remove you can sell later so you'll nearly break even. You will spend a lot of time tracking down parts if you don't have a donor but it's very doable.
