I've owned both.
I traded in a 2014 B8.5 S4 for a 2008 RS4.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I wasn't making payments on either car, both were purchased outright, so it's not due to budgetary concerns. In fact, the maintenance on the RS4 has actually been more expensive than the maintenance on the S4 would have been.
The RS4 is far more fun to drive. Not a little bit more. It's a different league.
The power delivery on the S4 comes on way sooner, the RS4 has to be revved. The S4 can make more power pretty easily. I haven't cared in the slightest. This has been the first car (#16? #17 maybe?) that I've left stock, and I don't have intentions of changing that aside from MAYBE an exhaust, just to make it a bit louder.
And if it matters to you, the S4 never got a second glance at the local meets. The RS4? Very different story. Get dragged to an LSTECH meet, even there it drew a crowd.
As for the only thing the RS4 does better is the exhaust note? from an owner of both, that's laughable.
