Dealership service price guide? Curious how much I've saved DIY-ing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First off, I've been a n00b lurker around here for the past couple of years, leeching all of the awesome info posted here to perform DIY service on my A4... so a bigass Thank You! is in order.

I'm curious, is there a dealership price quote guide out there detailing hour estimates or what I would have been charged for the following service items that I've been able to do myself (assuming I don't cause the car to explode with my Thanksgiving weekend plans)? I called the only dealership in KC about the trans fluid and filter change and got something like $850 quoted to me. I LOL'd and hung up.

    • Air filters (cabin/intake)
    • Halogen headlight bulb change (user manual says to take it to the dealer lol)
    • Spark plugs
    • PCV valve / Turbo breather tube
    • Valve cover gasket
    • Throttle body carbon cleanout
    • Cam follower change
    • Motor mounts (including snub)
    • Brake pads on all four corners
    • Timing belt + water pump + thermostat + tensioners + idler pully (happening Thanksgiving weekend)
    • CVT trans fluid/filter change (happening Thanksgiving weekend)
    • Fuel filter change (happening Thanksgiving weekend)

Not sure if there's a guide. Usually they have some way to estimate the hours based on what you're having done and then add in parts.

    I'll give my guesses, though.

    In order
    100
    100
    100
    150
    200
    300
    150
    350
    300
    bend over
    900
    200

    Like I said, total guesses.

The dealer here in Toronto charges $1250 for the timing belt; roughly $930 USD.

If my calculations are correct you will save exactly $1,000,000 dollars of money.

But really though, diy anyway cause dealers are greedy bastards. Don't forget to flush your brake lines when you do the brakes.
Ive done all of those jobs except for the transmission fluid change. Of all of them the one that sucks the most is motor mounts. (Passenger side top nut is a whore) Timing belt is tedious so don't fuck up. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions.

One dealer quoted me $650 for motor mounts NOT INCLUDING LABOR. I had a sensible chuckle and left.

    $1,000,000? Seems a bit low :)

Balls... forgot about the brake fluid flush... only 2 years overdue haha.

If there's a job that you need done and you aren't up for the DIY approach check out Importmasters in KCMO. I'm in Lawrence and they have done great work for me. They only work on Audi and VW (30 years experience) and I trust them more than the dealer. Otherwise, yeah, save a ton of money by doing the work yourself!

Thanks for the tip! I've actually been on the lookout for a good shop to have in my back pocket when my DIY luck inevitably runs out.
