For my tastes the answer is "yes under certain situations". 1st gear acceleration sounds amazing with the combo. It's really loud but no drone. Accelerating in 2nd-5th in the mid rpm range sounded terrible from inside the cabin due to the drone.

Now that I've done it twice it only takes about 20 mins so no big deal. I also have the soundaktor turned off and the exhaust flaps in the original setting which I think sounds the best.
Yeah it definitely quieted down. My ears were ringing a bit the first week after install. That's when I had to plug the trunk. Now it is quiet enough for me to have my kids ride in the back.

How exactly would an exhaust get quieter with 500 miles on it? Typically they get a bit louder with some miles. If I were to do anything to my exhaust, it would just be the resonator delete Audi sells.

Carbon deposit on the inside of the downpipe changing the tone.

ahhh I see. so there is a cat in there. I was thinking of going non cat. in videos I have seen on youtube the non cat sounds like what I like but in person it might be a total different thing.

So without putting the OEM sound enhancing kit back on (too loud) or spending $1500+ on a catback exhaust, does anyone have any ideas for how to get more sound volume but not too much sound volume? I want the deeper sound that came with the kit but without the resonance/buzzing/drone it produces when combined with the downpipe. Currently I have:

    1. AWE resonated and catted downpipe
    2. Exhaust flaps programmed open all the time
    3. Soundaktor back on again (sounds good to me with this current setup)
    4. 034 dogbone insert (seriously...changes the tone of the engine sounds under "spirited" acceleration for the better)

I realize this is all very subjective and personal tastes differ, but I'm curious what other paths one could take. Is there a more aggressive sounding mid-muffler available that could replace the very (overly) effective OEM version for example?

Did you unplug the holes in your trunk? That would get you a little more sound in the cabin.

I say give your downpipe the 500 miles then try the res-delete again. You may notice a change in the droning/tone.

also enable your exhaust flaps again so it's not droning as much putting around town or cruising on the freeway. that's partly what they are for. with a DP, when those flaps open up, the volume increases greatly.

i havent tried coding the flapps yet but can we do the setting in percentage increments?

my assumption is to keep them closed more than stock so there is less droning till u hit the accelerator more while driving around town.

no, the setting is to enable/disabled (basically uncheck a box that indicates the car has muffler valves installed)

I would unplug the holes except I like the added benefit of reduced road noise. Living in the NW where you can legally drive with studded tires for half the year (it's ridiculous) really does a number to the road surfaces. Basically we cruise around on exposed aggregate roads that produce a ton of road noise no matter what kind of car you drive. Our low profile tires don't help much on this surface either. I like the idea of keeping the res-delete and putting it back on again in a few months. I already own it so why not - right?

You'll love it - the sound is great and just about as good as what you'd get from some of the catbacks out there. Just be wary of adding a downpipe later on since it gets really loud then.

The dealer did scam me on price. They claimed it took 1.3 hours to install... Charged me $218 which was more than I paid for the part. The dealer where I got the car was only going to charge me $160 for the install. I guess I paid a premium for convenience as the dealer I chose is close to work. Oh well, they probably lost all my future business.

    probably?
it should be a definite yes.

also you could go back and tell them the other dealership is charging less. they can still refund you the difference. you should try to get the quote on paper from the other place first. worst case you just tell them and they say no.

Yea, this was the first one they have done so that may be why it took 1.3 hours. Either way I am enjoying the resonator delete. It is much deeper and much louder than stock. I really like it so far and would never go any louder. It sounds like a beast on start up and anything over 3k rpm it has a deep scream. Great mod.

Lucky you. The clowns here in Denver quoted me $250 for install, but managed to match the Audi Parts' website price on the pipe at $240.
    Not worth $500, unfortunately.

STLCards - Wow, I was considering this resonator delete for my car, but your description has me reconsidering. I do not want my car to be "much louder than stock" or "anything over 3K rpm is has a deep scream".

It sounds good, but I would only do it if you are keeping the stock downpipe. We did one of these on a car paired with a catless downpipe and it was super loud and droned like no tomorrow.

From the outside, the res delete on the stock downpipe sounds great, never drove it in that configuration though so I cant speak for the drone.

as I keep looking at this kit audi has provided, it is meant for the home mechanic to be able to do this with very minimal tools out side the norm. if you guys are paying for installation why not just go to a muffler shop and not buy this kit at all. they can fab up a pipe and do some welding for far less money than the kit alone. this makes no sense to buy the kit and have someone else install it.

This does not make the car too loud, it makes it sound like it should have from the factory.
If you unplug or turn off the exhaust valves you start to get some very mild drone, but if you keep the exhaust valves on it is a very civil and quiet car when you want it to be, but it can scream its heart out when you push it.

It makes the car sound like it should from the factory. Go up to a dealership and see if you can hear one or test drive it. IMO it sounds way better than stock. It now sounds like a 'S' car rather than an 'A' car.

It takes all of 30 minutes with a $35 exhaust cutter.

Do it yourself. I've done two now.

    so yes, $300 is insane.

Even though any muffler shop could easily make this part, if I decided to do it, and I just might, I would still buy the Audi part and then take it to a muffler shop to install it.

I paid 122CAD for labour and 267CAD for the new pipe= 390CAD + tx att the local Audi Dealer here in Ottawa, done within a morning and fully warrantied by Audi. It was a no brainer for me.

wouldn't getting any aftermarket downpipe make the sound pretty loud?

changing the down pipe doesn't necessarily mean you have to do a tune. it can also be for the sound
