if you've got mac (which you should) PodUtil

if you've got pc, irip (i think its called)

PodUtil is awesome beacause you can rip all your shit at the same time, but you have to click the 'dont want to register' button like every 150 songs.

if you want a free quick and easy way to do it turn on the external hard drive function on the ipod different models used different key strokes.

nano: connect to computer press menu and select button and you will see the ipod appear in 'my computer' it usually does not do this as it connect primarily as a virtual drive and syncs through i tunes. after that in a folder window select tools folder options view tab then "show hidden files and folders

if you browse through the now showing external hard drive you will see the music arrange in folders usually about 15-20 songs per folder. copy and paste each folder on a hard drive on the computer. beware because the files are randomly named ipod### or something rather cryptic.

after loading all songs use a free ware program that you can edit id3 tags usually these programs are relatively easy to find and lots of free ones out there. they should have an option to mass rename the files by artist-title or artist-title-track# etc select all convert and your done.

the only reason why i say this is because many of the ipod to computer programs are not free where as the programs to rename mass mp3 files are... hope this helps. if you google it other people might be able to better explain what i am spouting out off the top of my head.
