ANyone here drive beaters for the winter??

I'm still deciding on whether I should buy a set of snow tires or a winter beater to drive during the season..

Looking at cars around $1000-2000 range....(older golf\jettas, celica..etc)

I tried getting a few quotes online...
The price of insurance is more than the price of the car..
I was quoted $1800 for a $1000 - 89 Corolla...

That price is for a year of coverage though...

Not really sure on this insurance stuff...since I usually let my broker take care of things...but she's away on holiday now...

Do I have to stop the insurance on my Audi for the 3-4 months I'm gonna park it?
Can I insure cars per months not per year?

i dont bother .. just throw some dunlop sport m3's on there and drive away

The reason I have an Audi is so I don't have to drive a beater in the winter. Quattro rules...

As for your insurance, try to just get minimal coverage i.e. third party liability. In the case your beater get totaled, you don't really care. For the price of the car and the cost of insurance, just tow it to the junk yard.

my friend is selling a 92 golf 4 door for 1000 bucks. hes done alot of work to it getting it fixed up.

got the old company car for winter 94 Golf CL she's a beater for sure

You can park the Audi and just get fire/theft insurance on it and its dirt cheap. It can be stopped for months at a time.

If you go the route fo a beater, get the minimal coverage, shoudl be no where near that. But for me, the Audi is the winter car, with snow tires its hard to beat.
