Welcome. I just got joined the club with my B5 purchase too. The posts here were INVALUABLE in educating me. My buddy that spent $16k on a 2000 A4 2.8QT still cries when I tell him what I got mine for.

well it's all driver. the fwd will definetely trap higher but he will have to avoid wheelspin on launch. The quattro will have to avoid bogging and/or slipping the clutch too much. I like my chances against a fwd all else equal.

besides, a fwd in florida makes sense. a fwd audi in NY doesn't quite stack up.

quattro rocks, but if you are on a smaller budget, having a fwd A4 isnt so bad

I have a crazy question, is the motor transverse or longitudinal on the fronttrack a4 1.8s?

i never really thought about it but that's a pretty bad fwd configuration. more drivetrain loss than a tranverse stacked and more weight in front of the front axle.

sh*t, what doesn't make sense is a frontrak a4 with a gt28rs elim, its going to be hard as hell to launch the thing without bogging or spinning.

unless it shares a platform with an awd model. then it makes sense. but the drivetrain loss over a transverse is only the 90deg turn on the final drive, so its not big.

still a lot harder to do a T/B though

The only reason I can see for keeping the longitudinal configuration is simply cost/assembly factors since it is the same powertrain and chassis.

Thanks for the input. I'll try to get shots up soon.

BTW, my training as a "law dog" a number of years ago showed me how to drive a car in all conditions. Plus, it never fails that the guys in the snow-filled ditches are the ones with the 4wd.....thinking they can do things that can't be done with any vehicle. I guess I just can't have as much fun as you quattro guys on the back roads. But sn't that what the e-brake is for?

Yeah, 4wd sometimes gives sh!tty drivers the impression that there is more traction, but quattro won't help you stop faster. Anyway, I love quattro!

Don't get me wrong...given the choice, I would have gotten a quattro, BUT the price was right on the 2wd. It was owned by an anal retentive oncology doctor who kept the car immaculate. I got it with 72k miles for less than $8k.

Seeing as how 3/4 of the people having FWD A4's probably wont even pop the hood themselves, it wouldnt make sense to even draw up plans for a transverse mounted motor in the B5. After all, Audi's performance beliefs are invested in Quattro, not FWD.

and to stay on topic, looks clean, get some one peices and drop it

Awww, you cheated. One line at a time.
I know about the FronTrak advantage in the 1/4, but for snow, handling and high power output, AWD whomps ass on FWD.

You misunderstood. I meant sometimes when driving in the snow and what not, you sometimes may not realize how slick the roads are because it is easier to get going than in a 2wd car. But both cars take as long to stop.

Not for nothing, but I didn't post this for it to become a 2wd vs quattro pissing match.......nor for it to be transverse vs upside f^<%'n down motor thread.
I just wanted to share in the love that is Audi. I don't look at your pics and say should'da bought Santorin with the cold weather package.........
    Just my 2 cents.

I got a 98 FWD as well. I mainly got it because it was a year and a half ago and grabbed it for only $6400. I'd probably rather have AWD since it rains here all the time but I'm no racer and hardly drive these days so I'm happy with my decision overall.
