I have a 2013 A4 automatic and it's a great car but is not sporty AT ALL. I can't stand hammering the gas pedal and waiting for the power to kick in. With that said i'm considering buy a used higher mileage S4 Manual but I'm not to familiar with the powertain and how it holds up over time. here is a link to one nearby that i'm interested in getting.

I would actually prefer a DSG but the manuals are probably far more reliable. I work for a VW dealership and get heavy discounts on labor and parts or else I'd spend the extra money and get one with less miles.

I drove manuals for 20+ years, but I bought a DSG S4 and love it. In manual mode, the thing shifts far faster and more accurately than I can. I'm sure you're right about long term reliability, but for me it's the perfect compromise.

I'd say if you're going with a MT, the B8 will be fine. IMO If you end up wanting a DSG, steer towards the B8.5 since they're a bit more reliable. You won't be needing to hammer the gas pedal and waiting anymore -- that's for sure.

I came from a 6spd 14 A4 with sport package that I had tuned with APR to stage 1. It was a fun car but even tuned doesn't compare to the S4 in stock form. My S4 is dsg and I gotta say, having owned all manuals my life, with exception of my 08 R32 which was dsg, I really enjoy driving dsg's. Manuals are a ton of fun when you want that sporty feel, but for all other situations dsg wins in my book

Why not save your money, enjoy your A4 B8.5 for a few more years and when the price drops for the B9 S4, buy that instead?

    would not do that.

there are plenty of cars I would consider before making that move. You will notice any aging in the interior over your newer car and some of the great improvements are lost. flat bottom wheel, etc.

If you going for the S4 then look at the B8.5. 1 all the kinks the b8 had were addressed on the refresh including small design cues which IMHO looks much better. Also from all the testing performed by many out there it’s also faster out the gate due to different components used. That rear sport diff makes the car drive like it’s day and night...etc. OR! If you really looking to save cost just keep what you have and tune it, Change the turbo..etc. In the end do what makes you happy and will provide a proper platform to reach your goals. Whether it’s power or a dope show car that has both..etc

i do believe the B8 DSG is faster than the B8.5 DSG due to higher redline initially

Curious, have you tuned your A4 yet? Prior to getting an S4, I was a stage 2+ in my B7 A4. Intake, turbo back exhaust (no cat), HPFP, tune...I was around 270-275hp. Even after having my S4, I think my old A4 was pretty damn quick. Granted, once you get past 70mph, you're gonna fade, but up until then, you'd be able to hang with a lot of faster cars on the road. I'm under the impression that your B8.5 A4 would have more power with the same mods I had, so perhaps look into that then save up for a late model B8.5 S4??

I didn't see a price for the S4 you listed. What are they asking for it?

*edit*, Just checked APRs site and their Stage 1 will get you to 299hp!

That's for the gen 3 motor, pretty sure I still have the gen 2 2.0t which is still a very healthy bump in power 285hp 338tq. Now that I think of it i'll save on insurance and gas as well. If I take it to audi will they do the fluid flush even though it's not a recommended service?

My 2011 DSG was absolutely bullet-proof up to 71k, definitely the Achilles heel of the B8 if you are considering long term ownership.
