NOTE: I have stock downpipes. If you have AWE downpipes, you likely are hearing a different noise!
Hey all,
I installed my AWE Touring exhaust about a week ago. I probably have about 500 miles on it so far and I've noticed a new noise that I'm having trouble tracking down. When in automatic drive mode, if I stab the throttle lightly (not enough for it to downshift, but "lug" the engine instead), I hear what appears to be some type of hissing/weedwhacker/ticking sound. I want to say it's an exhaust leak, but I've inspected the system pretty thoroughly and I haven't been able to find any. I'm running just the touring catback mated up to the stock downpipes. It sounds like the noise is coming from the front/middle on the passenger side of the car.
I know that flex joints in certain exhaust systems can cause some additional noise. (I had this problem on my previous Subaru STI with the Grimmspeed Crosspipe) Given that the stock downpipes have flex joints, is it possible that the AWE setup just made something that was always present, louder? When I installed the catback the downpipes popped out quicker than I was expecting and they came "falling out". I hope that didn't cause the stock downpipe flex to crack!
Last night I re-seated/re-pasted the catback to downpipe connection and verified the stock sleeve clamps were nice and snug. I have not done this for the other connections yet, but they appear to be fine visually with no exhaust soot residue present. I've idled the car while underneath and wasn't able to feel any exhaust coming out from any of the connections.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
