    Car stalling itself

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay, so some of you may have seen my thread from a few months ago with my no start/running issues.

My car will start, run for a bit(sometimes a minute, sometimes 10, sometimes only a few seconds) then it will stall itself.

I've replaced a good amount of things so far:
    Fuel filter
    Fuel pump relay
    Fuel pump control module
    Onboard power supply control module
    Crankshaft position sensor

I got the p0089 code when I scanned the car the other day, and that go me thinking.

Could a pressure drop/spike cause the car to stall out? Is it worth it to try to replace the fuel pressure regulator, or the fuel pressure sensor? Could either one of those cause the car to stall itself frequently?

What's your year/model/mileage? Asking because I believe that's one of the codes that will cause Audi to actually look at your cam follower. If it's holed or worn and you're under 120k, you might get your hpfp (including thrust sensor) replaced free. I think a bad thrust sensor can cause start/idle issues (from what I've read, anyway).

As far as I know, you're outside of the warranty, but the code points to the cam. See this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ror-code-P0089

We've been doing a fair amount of these lately - if you need a shop to help (or further diagnose), let me know.

Have you tested the fuel pump itself (in-tank) using vag-com? I only ask because I see you replaced the relay and control module, but not the actual pump itself.

No I have not, I don't have vagcom. The pump is priming well, but it still could be the problem.

I ordered the thrust sensor, so if that doesn't solve it I'm just going to bring it to a shop

Have you checked the cam follower? It's relatively easy to pull (just make sure you really tighten the crap out of the banjo bolt when you're putting the hpfp back in). You're out of the extended warranty period, so no help there. If the cam follower is holed, you probably need a new hpfp (which will come with a thrust sensor) and that might resolve your issue. Of course, you'll probably also want to check your camshaft to see if it needs to be replaced...

Yup, that was the first thing I checked. Didn't seem uneven or anything as far as material loss, definitely no holes. And the camshaft looked fine as well.

If you could get your hands on vag com, check measuring value 106, its the fuel pump duty cycle. Should not be over 50%

You did put a new follower in didn't you? That one looks like it's on the last leg.
What ever makes sense go with the opposite and you got it

What about the low pressure fuel pump? Or the pcv? Are both of those functioning properly?

Just replaced the thrust sensor, can't even get it to run. It's just cranking trying to start, but not turning over. I haven't replaced the lpfp or pcv yet.

This leads into my question, my fuel pump is priming, but I'm assuming it can still be broken. Possibly not making enough pressure.

Also, where does the fuel pump ground to?

Heard from the shop today, they were investigating a fuel sender problem, apparently the fuel gauge was reading way off. I'll update once the official diagnosis is in
