    Cool My VR6 Journey

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone, while cruising my 2.7 had a freakish end last November as a wrist pin cracked and one of the RPM Rods let go of a piston and blew a hole out on both sides of the block. And working on Camp Pendleton, and my home being in Antelope Valley and never being home meant the car was going to sit on ice for some time due to work constraints due to distance. Anyways Every now and then I traveled home for a couple days and was able to slowly turn wrenches and accumulate the necessary parts. Anyways I'm just finishing my transition out of the Corps and being home for good starting September

I've mainly been posting on Facebook & Instagram, so I'll just post all the content I have so far and update in the coming weeks as I begin to pick up speed on my progression. I've sorted the bottom end, and currently looking at the Cylinder head and the options for Valves & cams along with the other long list of things I'll need to get sorted.

    Anyways, here you guys go.

Sorry about the block eruption. How many miles were on her? Glad to see you're keeping the car though and giving her another ( more beastly And fun ) life!

Lol, that hole looks like a mathematically perfect circle!

Back in the day I had a cammed vr6 with TECHTONICS cams and valve train components. I drove the shit out of it for years with no issues whatsoever. TT has tons of different cam profiles too, I'm sure they have one suitable for turbo apps.

It's funny you mention sound because I got into a heated discussion on here about a certain wide body avant with (K03s...) that I thought would be totally bad ass with a VR swap. One of the reasons was the sound. A VR has one of the best sounds ever and people were arguing that a 2.7t has the best sound. I was like "no way". 2.7t might as well be a dishwasher as far as sound goes.

I've recently fallen in love with Ricky's setup. Its sounds perfect IMHO. However I am going to try to use my Twin 2 and retrofit the DP to the cat back system. Im curious what the outcome will be.

    Here's Ricky's VRT exhaust.

That sounds good. I do think that listening to the exhaust is only part of the equation with the vr though, it's like a symphony with intake and exhaust.

Whatever you run will sound good. My vr I was talking about was run on a 2.25" when everyone else had a 2.5" exhaust and it was different but still awesome.

    Are you self tuning?

Spliced S4/VR6 harness and tuning will be by: Bische Performance. He has a 3.2 VR6T in his B6 A4 running OEM management. Only person to successfully get a VR running in a B5 chassis as if it came like that from the factory, all functions retained. No Xmas lights on the dash.

That's awesome. I can't wait till my TDI trans arrives along with other goodies in the next couple weeks, I drop the bottom end to the machinist in 10 Days, and I'm still trying to decide which components to use for the head.

Could have been anything... it's almost impossible to tell where/why an engine failure happened after the fact when it's total destruction.

RPM rods just like many others are just copies... if they weren't checked before installing it could have been the cause, pretty sure people have noted that come tolerances have been off on some of their rods... who knows for sure though.

Eagle had a similar issue a few years ago. No performance engine part unless OEM should be considered as "drop in"

Well if it was on his AWE stage 3 kit, the wrist pin definitely did't fail from power... unless he had a garbage tune on alcohol.

Ran K24s on the motor for roughly 70k on pump fuel, and I did beat the crap out of the car for some time before down sizing to my AWE kit, originally looking for an Allroad to slap the K24s on, but the S4 had other plans, and when the motor let go, I decided to keep it, and not purchase an allroad. Its just one of those things, but like it was stated above, no way to really tell exactly why the wrist pin failed. Just looking forward from this point on.

So many new bolt on parts available now. Engine brackets From Issam, oil pan, starter, coolant pipes from Touaregs also are able to be utilized. Of course the exhaust mani, intake mani are either retrofitted or custom. But this swap is only as hard as you make it out to be. The only item I am incapable of fabricating personally is the spliced harness. Most go stand alone, but for my personal preferences I am utilizing OEM management like Bische does in his B6 VRT.

Without a doubt, Issam @ INAEngineering has been a huge supporter and a great friend. And of course he led me to Bische who has made my harness and is writing the software for the ECU. Everyone, those who has finished a VRT B5 and those currently working on their project have all been a huge help thus far. Good group of collaborating individuals I've been lucky to keep in contact with.
