Love this thread. Glad to see another MA guy.

Reguarding the Catch Can in cold weather issue: I drive my car year round, and have a catch can setup (034 motorsport). It is fine. Stay on top of regularly emptying it and you will be okay. I empty it once a week in the winter months.

Thanks, I'll have to revisit the possibility of getting one. First though I really need to work on some suspension and brake upgrades. Got Hotchkis front and rear sways and a UR strut tower brace on the way. That should help out a bit in the cornering department, then I just have to figure out what to do with my brakes. A BBK would involve new wheels, tires and a drop, so would run me about $4-5k total, and I'm supposed to be saving up for a new house so I think I may just stick with some nice pads, SS lines and fluid for now.

Also been wondering if I should do anything about the 'lifetime' timing chain now that I just passed 120k miles. Audis aren't exactly known for their robust guides, although you'd hope they'd have learned their lesson after the 4.2 V8 fiasco.

Yeah, you would hope, but I think they are destined to make repeat mistakes in that department.

I'll be looking to replace my timing accessories as well.. Debating on having a shop do it or just opening it up myself..I've never let a shop touch my cars except to tune them, but the b8 seems a little more involved than the older Audi's I have been used to

Holy crap op, I just realized we're neighbors. Your car doesn't happen to have rotors on it? I always pass a black B8 on my way to pick up my kid from day care on Bedford st.

I also balk at the thought of having anyone other than myself laying a finger on my car but have been considering the same thing. I have no problem tearing things apart and putting them back together again, but this really doesn't look like a very fun job to be honest. New turbo, carbon cleaning, whatever no big deal. But something like this could probably benefit from having it done by someone who's done it before.

Yes, it has 4 of them actually.

Seriously though it's probably not me because I probably would have noticed your car and I don't think I have.

I was referring to the rotor wheels, just in case you weren't sure.........I see a car identical to yours almost every day around 530 on Bedford rd when I'm flying up that hill.

You got that turbo in quick! Nice build.

Also... If your on the stock 17's. You can get some spacers from ECS to get the Q5 brake kit in. Not a bad install and made a huge improvement.

LOL that would be funny. It would be really funny if you, me and blbroo lived next to Lettuce. He wouldn't even come out of his house...

Ha! I think his wife would leave him for spending too much time with us.

I've got no active b8 neighbors in this area. We need a Midwest meetup in STL called Ring the Arch. A local shop could host and we could help each other with installs. I would start it with using my garage, but would guess it would be me and my triple squares downing beer alone.

Unlike others who didn't join in and embrace the fun, Lettuce keeps coming back.

Wonderful thread once again; been following avidly, and love the sleeper stock look; doing the exact same thing here; do post up what you decide to do for the BBK kit, as I'm also in the same boat, I run the stock 17' in the winter and 18' in the summer; if its possible for spacers to solve our issue, that's a great option to have.

Also, I have the 034 catch can, and some brutal winters; I think that if we just empty the can out on a regular basis it should be good in these weather conditions.

Yeah man, it took every last ounce of willpower not to take Thurs and Fri off of work to get it in even sooner. Thanks for getting it out to me so fast, I'm loving the thing so far.

And are you serious about the Q5 BBK fitting on stock 17s with spacers? I pretty much completely disregarded getting spacers due to increasing rotational mass being pretty much last on my list of things to do, but if it can allow me to fit the Q5 kit then I can get the two-piece rotors with aluminum hats to make up the difference and then some. Did you do this yourself? What size spacers will I need?

Thanks dude. I will keep this thread updated with everything I do, don't worry. And I'm glad you've also had good experiences with the catch can in the winter months, I'm pretty much set on getting one at some point now.

When I was signing up for an account here I basically looked around my desk until I came across a word I felt I could live with. The process went something like this:

Sorry, I'm keeping my car as stock-looking as possible for the foreseeable future. If I ever do upgrade the wheels it'll be to flow forged 19" V710s in hyper silver.

New sway bars have arrived, install happening tomorrow. Also getting a nice new OEM windshield (shit's super pitted).

Also took some pics of my car the other night.

Still waiting on my strut tower brace. Apparently it's backordered and will ship sometime this week. Bastards.

FYI, your windshield is covered under your insurance, with no increase to your premium. It would be a shame if a crack appeared on it from an unknown object hitting it. You have no idea what happened. Free windshield. Also, I strongly recommend you replace the stretch bolts for the rear bar. They can bind and snap. Ask Blbroo. And make sure you use blue locktite on all threads. They will loosen up, and get noisy if you don't. $6 aggravation insurance.

Along with blue locktite, grease the bushings a lot before you put the bars in them. For double noise protection, you can even wrap teflon tape around the bars where the bushing meets them. Otherwise, you get some horrible crackling / popping sounds.

I'm calling it now, once you install these you're gonna want to upgrade your shock and springs. You'll see..... The good news you'll still look stock with those 17's.

Yes, comprehensive is covering the windshield, but because the car is more than a couple years old I have to pay the difference to get OEM glass. It's only like $120 so not a huge deal.

Shit man, that's the worst. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be grabbing some replacement bolts from the hardware store for sure. Any reason not to do this? Do they need to be some sort of special OEM stretch bolt or will any old hardened bolt do?

Already planned on the locktite and one of the reasons I got these Hotchkis bars is they have grease nipples on all 4 bushings. Should be a breeze to keep them squeak-free but I'll be prelubing them for sure.

We shall see. Every time I say something's good enough, two weeks later I'm used to it and crave something better. I really need to focus on brakes after this though. Went out on 495 to test out the new turbo the other night (Friday, temps were in the 60s) and man this thing flies compared to the stock K03. Brakes get cooked and start vibrating way too fast. Probably gonna get the Q5 Brembos and if they don't fit I'll just get new wheels. Looking stock is important to me, but my #1 priority is performance and if that means the stockers gotta go then the stockers gotta go.

You're not gonna find them at the hardware store.

Here a link that shows the man. number. Call Audi of Burlington tomorrow and see if they have them. They should. If they don't they can get them by Thursday. I really wouldn't do this install without them. The old bolts will feel tight as you screw them in, but if you try moving the end link it will be very loose. If you try to keep cranking them down, they can snap on you. I used an air gun and got lucky the first time. Had to go back to stock because of a body noise issue. Once the noise was resolved by the dealer I grabbed another set of bolts, and they went in like butter.

Here's an install guide with torque specs.

    http://www.ecodetuning.com/Pictures/...ll%20Guide.pdf

It makes the install straight forward. Only use ramps, don't use Jack stands. And here's a pro tip. The rear bar will not be very easy to remove once you remove the bolts. Jack up one side of the car while it's on ramps (it's ok, I did it 3 times) this will allow just enough clearance to easily pull out the bar. Pay attention tot he position of the endlink before you take them off, and reinstall the on the new bar. There won't being play once you torque them down. Slip the new bar in with the end links attached, and lower the side of the car back into the ramp. Then carry on with the directions. This is really the hardest part.

Thanks for that, the Hotchkis bar came with instructions but those look a lot better. And they include a list of necessary hardware. But what's so special about these bolts? Looks to me like they're just M10x65 hex bolts. I should definitely be able to find those at the hardware store. If not I'll go to Audi, but I imagine they'd be at least triple the price there. I'm guessing I should get the bolts for the front too?

Audi uses a lot of torque to yield bolts that distort at the torque spec and lock/pinch themselves in with an additional 90 degree turn. I am not sure if a standard bolt and loctite would work as well, but would get the OEM ones to be safe.

This. They stretch with the proper torque. Audi charges like $4 per bolt. You only need 2. The ones that you use for the bushing brackets are much smaller, and are fine to reuse. The fronts aren't as crucial because you use nuts instead of cranking them into tapped a hole in a pretty expensive swing arm. Less room for error with the nut.
