B8.5 allroad Info & Resources Megathread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've noticed increased allroad activity here lately, which is awesome. After getting my own allroad in January, I realized that there's not a lot of info out there for these cars, so I'm aiming to address that.

The purpose of this thread is to compile as much B8.5 allroad info as possible in one central place. For now, I’m going to skip anything that is shared with the B8 A4 or S4, since a lot of that info has been covered before. The goal is to be a starting point for people learning about the B8.5 allroad. If you have any suggestions or useful information, please feel free to chime in. Some of this info will overlap with B8 A4 Avant info, naturally, since they are closely related to allroads. I’ll try to keep this thread regularly updated.

2013 allroad owner's manual (PDF) Thanks to theSaint024 for putting this together!

    Frequently searched OE Part numbers:

allroad grille WITHOUT plate mount: 8K0853651S1RR

allroad grille WITH plate mount: 8K0853651AB1RR

Will any other grille fit the B8.5 allroad? Currently, no. The allroad grille is a unique shape.
Can I order just the covers for the allroad grille? Sadly, no. There is more underneath the license plate mount than what is covered by those pieces, as seen below.

The allroad uses the larger "dumbo" style mirrors, so if you plan to purchase other mirrors for your allroad, be sure you're getting the correct style. The dumbo mirrors have the turn signal lens integrated into the mirror cap, while the turn signal lens is under the cap on the newer mirrors.

    Camp allroad
Block off your calendars now because you won’t want to miss Camp allroad, THE event of the year for any Audi Avant fan. Join us in the Rocky Mountains for an epic gathering of endurance testing, great workshops and all out wicked fun. No excuses, it is time for some Audi adventure.

    What is Camp allroad?
Camp allroad is a monumental event celebrating the iconic, ultimate utility vehicle from Audi. This is a get together unlike any other, with Audi Avant enthusiasts coming from all over the country for a weekend of stories, adventure, and friendships. Colorado Springs serves as our backdrop for Camp allroad 2015, providing a wealth of breathtaking scenic drives, both on and off-road.

    What makes Camp allroad different?
There are many annual Audi gatherings and events, but Camp allroad is the first Avant focused event with the main focus being the C5 Audi allroad (2001-2005) and the new B8.5 allroad (2012-present). Even though they are the feature Avant variant, we are not limiting this event to only to the allroad. Ideally, we want a place where all Audi owners can come together and bring to light and spread the word through adventure and passion what we all know to be true, that nothing beats owning an Audi Avant.

    Why Camp allroad?
This August, a couple allroad enthusiasts decided that it would be fun to get a handful of other owners together for a fun weekend. We would pick a central location and all enjoy a scenic road trip in the allroad there, then do some camping and storytelling and eventually part ways with some great memories. We brought the idea up to a couple allroad groups and the interest was more than we ever expected. Audi owners from Canada, Mexico, as far east as Pennsylvania, and as far west as California wanted to join in for a memorable experience and we, as a group, were not going to ignore this interest and passion from these owners, so we stepped up to the plate and began the Camp allroad journey.

I don't own an Avant, can I still come?
Although this event is focused only on the Avant, we at Camp allroad know that there are many out there that may own another Audi but still have a soft spot for an Avant or maybe they are in the market for one and just havent found the perfect match yet. Because of this, we say the more the merrier. Just know that you may get tired of hearing how great the Avant is (the truth hurts sometimes) but we guarantee that you will be welcomed with open hatches and that you will have a great time!
    When is Camp allroad?
    July 17-19th, 2015

Wish your allroad had a black headliner like the Sport interior cars? Here's a list of al the parts needed. This list is still being researched but is believed to be complete. These part numbers were compiled using genuineaudiparts.com and other online sources. Some of these part numbers may be redundant or included with other pieces. You may or may not need all these parts for your car if you currently have a black/grey interior. Verify these part numbers with what you need for your car before ordering.

B8.5 allroad Info & Resources Megathread

    Roof Rack options

While the B8 A4 Avant (and many other Audi models) have flush roof rails, the B8.5 allroad returns to Audi’s longroof roots and features raised roof rails. Personally, I much prefer the look of the raised rails, but others may like flush rails.*

    Flush rails:

    Raised rails:

Raised rails have quite a few options when it comes to aftermarket roof racks. The most widely-known brands are Thule and Yakima, who both offer standard and aerodynamic bar options. Audi offers its own base rack, and RockyMounts also offers products specifically for raised rails. Here’s a basic rundown of what is needed for the allroad’s raised rails:

    Thule AeroBlade:
Thule offers an aerodynamic crossbar option called the AeroBlade for the allroad. The AeroBlade Edge crossbar attaches directly to the allroad's raised rails and does not require a separate foot kit.The AeroBlade Edge offers more clearance under the crossbars than other options, which is important for sunroof operation and using certain accessories. The allroad uses the AeroBlade Edge 7502 & 7503 (silver) or 7502B & 7503B (black). The Aeroblade Edge attaches directly to the raised rails and does not require a separate foot kit.

Fitment info on the Thule AeroBlade Edge:

    - Part #'s 7502 and 7503 are needed (add "B" to part # for black)
    - Full venting of sunroof
    - Full sunroof functionality - need to do a small amount of filing to the plastic on the bottom of the front bars to ensure it does not stop itself
    - Using T-Track'ed Thule product (baskets, bike racks, etc) you can still maintain all functionality of the sunroof as well

Thule offers multiple styles of the Aeroblade. The AeroBlade ARB53 has crossbars that extend past the feet, offering more space for mounting accessories. The AeroBlade ARB53 uses Thule's 450R foot kit.

    Thule Squarebars:
Thule’s standard allroad solution uses their Crossroad Railing Foot Pack 450 and a pair of Thule’s 58” long square crossbars. (If anyone has photos of these on an allroad, please post and I'll add them here!)

    Yakima Roundbars:
Yakima’s Railgrab towers clamp onto the car’s roof rails, and provide a stable base for Yakima’s standard round bar. The allroad requires at least 48” long round crossbars.

Yakima also has a new raised rail solution on the market, the new Timberline tower. I haven't seen these on a car yet, nor have I heard any reviews. I will update accordingly in the future.

    Yakima Whispbars:
Whispbar started in New Zealand in 2006, and was purchased by Yakima in 2010. Whispbars feature an aerodynamic wing-like shape, similar to the Thule AeroBlade Edge, claimed to be quieter and better for gas mileage than round or square crossbars.

Yakima offers three crossbar options for the allroad: The Railbar, which clamps directly onto and sits between the roof rails; the Flushbar, which sits on top of the rails; and the Throughbar, which is similar to the Flushbar, but whose ends extend past the feet for more mounting options. The Flushbar and Throughbar require the K328 fit kit, while the Railbars do not require extra parts.

    Railbar:

    Flushbar:

    Throughbar:

For a lengthy review of Yakima's Whispbars on a B8 Avant, I recommend this thread on AudiWorld.

    RockyMounts:
RockyMounts is a relatively young company based in Boulder, Colorado. I own a set of RockyMounts euro pitchfork bike mounts, and the build quality is as good, if not better, than my old Yakima roundbar rack accessories. RockyMounts focuses more on accessories for other manufacturers' racks, but does offer a single mount & crossbar option that works perfectly on the allroad (and their site features an allroad in their product images).

RockyMounts offers Flagstaff towers and Ouray aerodynamic crossbars for raised roof rails. They can use many of RockyMounts’ own accessories, as well as others meant for other aero-style crossbars.

RockyMounts also offers a relatively inexpensive cargo basket, the 14’er Cage basket, if you’re looking for a rooftop cargo solution and don’t necessarily want a roof box, or haul something that doesn’t fit inside one.

    Audi OE roof rack:
Audi’s Base Carrier Bars are similar to the Whispbars and AeroBlades above, and can use many of the same accessories. The MSRP of a set is $440, but they can currently be found online around $370. Audi part #8K9071151L

There are a few things worth noting when it comes to roof racks:

    1. The different styles of crossbars mean that accessories often will only work with one style. Accessories that mount to Yakima’s round crossbars will not work with Thule’s square crossbars, and vice versa, and neither will work with the Whispbars or AeroBlades.

    2. However, because the Whispbar and AeroBlade both use a similar “channel” design for mounting accessories, many will work with both. Double check when ordering accessories for your rack that you’re purchasing for the correct crossbars. Yakima also offers a mount adapter for their Whispbars to use accessories originally designed for round crossbars.

    3. The Whispbar Railbars sit rather low between the allroad’s roof rails. Because of this, some owners (myself included) have noticed that they can interfere with the allroad’s panoramic sunroof operation. I have found that while it is still possible to vent my sunroof, I can’t fully open the sunroof without it running into the crossbars. This may be a dealbreaker for some. I normally don't leave my Whispbars on the car unless I'm using them with an accessory like bike mounts or my cargo box, and I wouldn't open my sunroof in those situations anyway. If being able to open your sunroof while also using your roof rack is important to you, I would suggest choosing a crossbar other than the Whispbar Railcars.

Whispbar Railbars on my B8.5 allroad:

    4. Also because of how low the Whispbar Railbars sit, there may be problems using Yakima’s own line of SkyBox cargo boxes. I experienced this when I tried to mount my Yakima SkyBox16 onto my allroad with Whispbar Railbars. The SkyBox uses a foot clamp design that hinges in the front, and hangs down a few inches from the bottom of the box. In my experience, the rear Railbar crossbar does not offer enough clearance between the roof and the crossbar to fit the SkyBox clamps without scratching and/or denting the roof (that was not a fun discovery). As mentioned above, the Thule AeroBlade Edge offers a bit more clearance under the crossbars, yet still attaches directly to the allroad's raised rails, offering a sleeker look than crossbars that sit on a raised foot.

If you want to use a cargo box and the Whispbar Railbar, I highly recommend one with a lower profile foot design. I now have a Thule Force L 628 cargo box. Thule’s cargo boxes feature a foot design that clamps down from the top, not from the front, so they don’t require as much roof clearance as the Yakima SkyBox does. There are many other box options available, but be sure to keep clearance issues in mind when purchasing your rack and box.

    SkyBox clamps:

    Thule cargo box clamps:

    *And as a final note:
Yes, you can swap your allroad raised roof rails for B8 A4 Avant flush rails, as Shawn@PacificGerman did on his allroad project in 2014: http://bit.ly/1LgxfrU

It has existed for a while in my simplenote, but I only just realized others may find it useful as well. Sorry 'bout that.

PS: Do you have a project thread I can link to?

The black headliner parts list post was bugging me, so I reformatted it with part numbers first and links to those parts on GAP. Doing so helped clean up the list, as I had a couple parts listed more than once. It's now better organized and hopefully easier to understand.

First thing I was looking up was the correct roof rack for our B8.5 allroads. Since we have the rails, we just need the cross bars (aka carrier bars in Audi-speak).

From the Audi Parts and Accessories website:

OEM Base Carrier Bars - allroad - Silver & Black
    Part Number: 8K9071151L
    Dimensions (L x W x H in) - 47.64 x 6.69 x 4.72
    T-Slot mechanism

    MSRP $440.

I've seen it on Amazon for about $405.
But best price (so far) has been on ECS, at about $370.

Awesome, thanks! I've got a start on aftermarket crossbars and rack info that I'll be posting soon.

I have the base bars from audi but my mont blanc luggage basket could not fit on it. Maxed out the length and it was still too short.

I had to move the front rail back, from the 2 dots its supposed to be set at(?)

Absolutely. I'm going to post the rack info in the empty post above when it's ready.

Thanks for starting the thread. As an early purchaser of an allroad I have had quite a bit of fun making the the mods to my car. A thread such as this would certainly have been helpful and am happy to contribute now. always good to give back...pay it forward.

I just added the allroad roof rack options in post #6 above. I'm sure I have left out other racks/mounts, so if you have any comments/suggestions/photos, please post and I'll edit as necessary.

If you're using any of the products mentioned in this thread, or have alternative suggestions, please feel free to post your reviews/impressions/headaches, etc. If you already have a thread on Audizine (or elsewhere) that deals with allroad-specific parts, mods, etc., please post a link! I want this to be a useful resource for all B8.5 allroad owners.

One thing that I'm going to add to my "someday" mod list is this 48" long universal LED strip for the hatch from deAutoKey. I've always felt that I could use more light back there, and this looks like a clever solution.

@dropshadow... with all the recent posts of Allroads, I'm thinking about it... perhaps I should upgrade to one... but I do love my red B8 Avant though!

Note for anyone looking at the splashguards (mudflaps). They are indeed 'black' so they will not match the fender paint.
I'm currently trying to decide if/how I can make them match before installing.

Also, Allroad vs Avant suspension reference:

Thought about it, but the trim levels are pretty much the same as the A4. I am putting together a post of available colors though.

I always get confused when I look at the newer cars on what the difference is between Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige and then some have sport and don't have sport. What happened to Sline or Non-Sline lol
