2005 Audi A4 1.8t - Not sure what is wrong, appreciate some input

Hello all, I am having some issues with my 2005 Audi A4 1.8L

For a good while my car would make a loud humming noise that, turns out, was the fuel pump whining. I don't know too much about cars
so I let a long time pass without doing anything because, other than the annoying noise, my car didn't seem to give me any problems.
Eventually, the car would stall (turn off) at red lights and would take a while to start. Once it did start the CEL and EPC light would come on.
After some research, I decided to replace the fuel filter (I bought it from the dealer $87) and that solved the loud humming issue.

Now, the "turning off" of my car has gotten worse. It will turn off as I am driving causing the steering wheel to stiffen up a lot.
I have to come to a stop to turn it on and it takes a while to turn over. Again, still turning on with the CEL and EPC light on but now taking longer to turn over
than in the past. Earlier this night, it turned off and would not start up. I was about to get it towed but by some miracle it turned on and it had very weak power
until I started to accelerate some more and then it went back to its usual state of high idling.

The code that I got from an OBDII reading was:

    P0420 bad cat/o2sensor

From the research I have done on here, my symptoms seem to point to a bad crankshaft position sensor
but the code the OBDII gave did not point in that direction. Another possibility I thought was maybe I have a bad fuel pump from it
having been over worked so long with the clogged filter?

Any ideas what could be wrong? Should I replace both the sensor and fuel pump??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Failing fuel pump would cause these symptoms but there could be other causes too. If you are using a cheap handheld code reader you are not necessarily seeing all of the engine codes that the Audi ECM can throw. Find someone with VCDS software and the appropriate ODBii cable or take it to a shop what deals with Volkswagen or Audi's and get them to pull all of the diagnostic codes. Until you do this everything is just speculation.

These are common symptoms of a bad crankshaft position sensor, but yeah, check with VCDS.
