    Hi all,

Looking at buying a 1998 V6 B5 with a blown auto trans to make some cash with a part out.

The guy is chasing $1000 AUD which is like ~$780 USD but i'd take a guess in saying id get it for $800 AUD or $625 USD. (I envy you US guys getting mint B5's so cheap, the market is shit here)

Real question is, how much is there to be made from our cars being parted?

anyone have a general price guide for good condition second hand parts for these?

Trying to suss if its worth it at all, cheers

It obviously depends on the condition and desirability of the pieces parts. If they are mostly stock, you can expect to not get much at all for them. Most folks don't part out for profit as much as they do to simply recoup what value they can from the vehicle.

With that said, if the engine is healthy and in good condition, you easily get 500-600 for it in which case (based on your prediction of getting it for 625$) you're only 125$ from breaking even.

To gain a sense of what prices go for, do some market analysis... In other words, look around at others prices for stuff they're parting out/selling.

In most cases, it's probably not going to be very profitable to buy a car for the purpose of parting it out. Typically, you will have a purpose for a specific portion of the car. Maybe you want the engine, the rest can be sold to offset what the engine might normally cost. May you are working on a race vr6 turbo build, in which case, you plan on gutting the inside and don't want any of it. In these cases, the cost of the purchase is justified with a purpose

Lastly I'll say this, what is your time worth? In most cases you'll be doing the part removal and shipping... If it were me, I wouldn't trust most folks to pull their own parts of my car... If someone wants the engine, you're the one pulling it! If someone wants the shift linkage, you're the one that gets to dig it out. If you are perfectly fine with that, go for it!

To get a general idea of the value of items:

-Go to ebay and search "1998 audi a4"
-Check the "Sold Listings" box to see what items actually sold for
-Refine the search by checking the "used" box

Also account for shipping, fees (if you sell on ebay), and the time it takes you to pull the part. I think you can probably get at least $1500 by the time it's all said and done. However I don't know what the marketplace is like over in that part of the world.

The other thing is it will take you a long while to be "all said and done", and at some point you're gonna be left with a shell that you will need a way to dispose.

Determine if it's worth it for you.

thanks for the really useful information Synaptic and LA4

Had no idea you could see sold listings to get a price reference, neat

So far I've priced up quite a bit through estimating off what has sold on ebay and what i've seen things go for on here

    super helpful stuff
