    Throttle Body Issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

I have been experiencing some weird issues with my 2013 Audi S5 recently and hope you guys might be able to help! So here is the issue I am having:

When sitting at a stop, sometimes (not always), my car idle will go up slowly to 1500rpm. While the car should sit at a nice ~500rpm at a stop, it slowly goes up and then hangs around 1500rpm until I give it a little gas and then it drops back down to 500rpm. This happens both when the engine is warm or cold (no difference). It also happens if I am in Neutral or in Gear. Having A/C off does not solve the issue as well.

As a note I have a RocEuro Cold Air intake on it. I thought this might be the issue so I cleaned the filter with K&N filter cleaner and reoiled. I made sure that the hose clamps were tight and properly fitted as well. The issue still was there. The intake and lowering springs are the only current mods on the car.

So I took it to the dealership for warranty and they said that the car is throwing throttle body adaptation errors. They said they re-zeroed in (possibly wrong term?) the throttle body but it did not help. They want me to put a stock air box back in, but I don't have it (didn't come with the car when I purchased) so they want me to buy it brand new. Is it really possible that a cold air intake that many people use here on the forums could be causing this issue?

NOTE: Also as a side note, about 15 seconds after turning the car on, it sucks a bunch of air in (makes a loud sucking noise). I think this is normal as I have seen other Audi's do it as well?

Any ideas as to anything else it might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is making me feel like there could be something going on with the MAF. Hasn't happened to me personally, but I've read numerous stories of damage to the MAF that results from excessively oiled aftermarket air filters.

Thanks for the feedback. By MAF do you mean Main Air Filter? If this is the issue do I need to buy a new air filter or just re-oil the current air filter properly?

Can't help on what may be the issue, but pretty sure the 3.0T does not have a MAF sensor - it calculates mass air flow from the MAP sensors.

O.P. : MAF typically refers to a "mass air flow" sensor - the engine control unit needs to know how much air is entering the intake to know how much fuel to inject. MAP is manifold air pressure.

These cotton oiled performace filters have a habit of messing up Mass Airflow Sensors (MAF), they detect airflow by using a heated element (hot wire) and a resitive bridge to calculate air flow. The oil from the filter builds up on the heated element and changes the amount of current required to heat the element to its normal operating temperature.
What can fix these problems is spraying some carb cleaner down the inlet to clean up the hot wire element. Dont go in there with scrubbing brushes and clothes as its a sensitive bit of equipment, just a spay of cleaner over the element should do it.

If you can remove the MAF from the car to clean it then even better, maybe use some isoproply alcohol and give it a good rinse off.

This is of course if the S5 uses a MAF sensor?

Interesting! Thanks for the replys! I bet it was that I over-oiled my filter. Can anyone confirm which type of sensor the 3.0T engine has and how to clean it?

The 3.0 TFSI engine does not have a MAF sensor. The 2.0T, the 3.2, and the 4.2 all have one. The 3.0 does not.

They originally thought it might be an air leak from a crack somewhere in the supercharger casing. Next time I called to see what the status was they said they wouldn't troubleshoot it any more until the stock airbox was on there so I am not really sure what to think at this point!

So I called today to get the code it was showing for Audi. Here it is:

He said the code was P156800 but I don't believe the last 2 (00) should be on there so it is Error Code: P1568

Throttle valve control unit mechanical malfunction passes/static.

Anyone know what this might be?

    Thanks in advance

So I took my intake filter off and looked under and the breather hose was just sitting under the intake kinda smashed. Here is what the breather hose looks like:

Is it normal for the hose to look smashed like that? Also what does a breather hose do exactly?

Just wanted to update this thread for future purposes. The issue ended up being a bad throttle body. Audi replaced under warranty and the error codes and issue have gone away.
