    Key FOB

Anyone know how to 'upgrade' the bulky S3 key FOB to the nicer 'thinner' key fob or if it's even possible?

I believe he's talking about this key:

And omg I want this key too. I asked the dealer if it was possible, they said no. I don't think they know what they're talking about though. Should be able to remove the chip from the current key, like they do with some of the remote starts, and then swap that into the nicer key. Getting the laser cut key insert might be a trick though...

But isn't that the key for a non-keyless entry vehicle? I had a key like that when I was driving around in a A4 loaner. You stick it right in the dash and the silver tip at the end is the button you press to start up the car.

Yea I was wondering how it would be possible to switch to that fob if the A3/S3 actually requires a key to be inserted and turned. What is this 2008?

That key fob is used in some of the cars that require it to be inserted - like my buddies 11 A5. But the same fob is used in the new A4's and Allroads, which in some cases has the push start ignition. I actually had a loaner Allroad and it had both the insert and push start, but I didn't need to use the insert at all.

Inside the fob is the transponder registered to the VIN. It's possible that the way the transponder is integrated into the board in our keys and is quite different than these. It doesn't mean that it's not possible to switch over, it will just take some more investigation. It would be really nice to have an electrical engineer of some sort take a look at this.

I did find this site doing some research:
    http://www.transpondery.com/transpon...r_catalog.html

I see that the S7 key is listed as the below (same as the 10+ allroad)
Original key with PCF7945AC HitagExt transponder, precoded by Component Security
    ( 8T0959754K, 8T0959754AG, 4H0837216A, 8T0959754Q and others )

    where the A3 is listed:
Transponder Megamos Crypto precoded by Component Security

that's not a lot of info to go on for our keys... it's a megamos crypto transponder, but there are versions of it.

I contacted a guy (@udi A3) who's a sponsor on audi-sport.net - From what I've read, sounds like he might be the man to help shed some light on this topic. He's done a lot of transponder and electrical work for the UK folks. Hopefully he gets my PM.

I thought I was the only one who was wondering about this. As soon as the salesperson handed me the key for my test drive, I was wondering why the S3 had the old style key. Couldn't be cost, as the B8 A4 has the new style key. I'd spend a modest amount of money to upgrade the key to one of these new styles.

all someone needs to do is find a blank key and try to program it with the s3.

If you can find me an OEM blank key I'm willing to give it a shot. I don't know what to search for so I'm stuck finding the 'name' of the key.

ill see if I can find the oem part number for you tomorrow. if this works, your gonna be very popular with the diy crowd.

personally I think the key that came with the car is fine. my only issue is that the key blade keeps popping out while it is in my pocket. the little button is too easily pressed in the pocket.

so if this new key works im down. also how many keys can be linked to on car anyways? that way the two original can still be working as backup.

I agree about the blade too. Mine always gets pressed and is open when I take it out of my pocket.

I thought you can program up to four but I could be wrong.

dealerships will always have the key. im not sure how much you would be saving if you bought from a third party tho.

also i just noticed that each key actually remembers settings. such as key one i will remember the last setting for the hvac and stereo vs the second key. i thought it was weird that it turned on a/c when i clearly didnt have it on last time and the radio was pretty loud when i didnt leave it that loud as well.

Would I need a certain key (part number) or should any of them work?

found the part number for an s4.
the remote and key portions are actually separate part numbers. you will need both to make it complete.

    remote: #8K0959754BBTKE
    key: #4H0837216BINB

    dealership price: $205.00
    programming at dealership: $155-175

    fyi:
from what I heard when they have the new designs for the future upcoming cars, the keys may also be redesigned as well. this style is considered old. I hope it will look more sleeker.

let us know if it works.

Not possible. Each new key comes from coded to the VIN itself, even though a technician will need to program. You cannot simply re-code a new key that is for a different car. The only way I've seen this possible on the newer keys is to take the key FOB apart and transfer the internals to a new key FOB.

    Good luck!

That's what my tech was guessing as well. Thought it was speculation, but sounding like its true. Either way, I'd happily gut one of my keys if I knew I could make the other one work...

I had no idea the new A3 platform still used the ancient key fob. I'm in a 2009 A4 and have the "new" style pictured above. I guess Audi had to cut costs somewhere to keep costs down and the key fob was target #1. Well maybe not #1...but you get the idea.

yeah I was thinking about the gutting thing as a backup plan. im down for that.

for anyone who is trying it, just take both keys apart and take multiple pics so we as a community can help you out before you start filling or cutting to them fit.

The new mk3 TT key is currently the slimmest design. Probably difficult to get unless you source from the uk.

Now that is nice! In 2015 if I still have to carry around a stupid key that would be the one I'd want.

I just ordered a remote off of eBay. First test will be to swap out the innards.

Took the top plate off one of my existing remotes and three screws have it locked in so I'll need to go to the hardware store for a screw driver.

Any chance of there being a guide to take apart the thinner key? I can't find one anywhere.

And I just order a key from a A4... Will try to modify it to be able to use in my S3 (if possible).
I guess coding is not an option, two different system? So, then the hardware from the orginal key needs to set into the A4 key. Might be a mission impossible, but I will try :)

Thanks for posting. I like the red and carbon, certainly the best you can do with that key style, but that original key is essentially the same as my wife's 2014 VW GLI key... definitely disappointing.

Yeah... also the Q7 from 2014 has same key. That is REALLY dissapointing. A car that cost as a cheap house get the same old key.

So... I took apart my second key and there is no transponder chip nor is there a 'gray' area under the IC board. Is it possible the transponder chip is soldered to the motherboard?
