Unhappy What type of transmission do I have?????

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought my son a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T about a year ago. The other day he lost all drive in it and when I arrived with the tow truck there was long trail of Trans fluid. So I am guessing he has killed that transmission. I know it is front wheel drive so it is a transaxle but that is all I know about it. How can I find out what type of transmission is in this car and how can I go about finding a decent rebuilt or used one without breaking the bank. I am a good enough mechanic to swap it out myself, but can't determine what I need to be looking for. Someone please help me out!!!!
Just remembered this may help...it has a triptronic automatic, Not sure what that is but it is where you can shift kind of like a manual if you move the lever to that position.

Ugggh. FWD TIP the worst combination. Time to swap in a 5-speed.

Fixed that for ya, If your son is cool with a manual I would swap in a 5 speed, much much more reliable (and cheaper). If not, you are looking for a 5HP19FL tiptronic transmission. Best bet would probably grabbing one from a junkyard or a partout and hope it lasts.

The FWD 5-speeds are dime a dozen in the Passats, etc. Even with a brand new clutch and flywheel kit, if you played your cards right you could conceivably do the swap for $500, all in.

That said, it could just be a rusted cooler line. In that case, there may not be too much damage. Depends on how much it was mercilessly flogged once it started slipping. Anyway, you could fix the leak, top it off, and see if there are any clutches left. You can loop the cooler lines with a rubber hose section for a quick test. And if you're really skeptical, you can just fill it with regular Dexron III fluid instead of getting the expensive stuff.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
Is there a site that shows how to go about a swap to a 5 speed. and possibly a complete parts list of the needed items to do this start to finish.

There certainly is a site like that. As luck would have it, you're already a member!
