Odd noise coming from the turbo

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The car is a 99 and has 130xxx on the clock. Local euro place i talked to and explained the noise i was hearing said to be my wastegate. The noise i am hearing is a grinding or tearing sound coming from the turbo on revving the engine up and on engine braking. I was going to replace the turbo with a either stock one or go to a k04 ball bearing because it fits right in. any ideas? the car is is MINT condition and nothing else is wrong besides that nasty sound

Mine did the same thing; made sort of a buzzing sound when decelerating. Replacing the turbo completely gets rid of this noise. The diagnosis you received is correct, it is the wastegate.

I did k04 on mine, didn't notice a difference, also have the cat gutted. But then again that's the only thing I've upgraded in terms of performance. Just don't want you to expect crazy gains.

Also a heads up, there is a bracket that "supports" the turbo that is held on with a allen head bolt and was a real PITA for me, I ended up stripping those stupid allen heads and ultimately cutting the bracket in half to get the turbo out. afterwards, I did not replace the bracket. not only have I not experienced negative effects since, but I can now swap the turbo in approx. 30-40 min since there is only 6 bolts and hoses/lines holding it in the car. Good luck!

No don't do that there is an exhaust hanger at the bottom of the down pipe. Should be 13 mm remove it. Take the heat shields off of the air box and the bolt holding it in. Setting the box to the side. The rest is you unless you wanna put the car in service position

Once you remove that the the bolts on the exhaust manifold the exhaust will swing back saying you will remove that down pipe bracket bolt
