    Transmission Swap to Manual

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What do all of you guys think of a transmission swap from automatic to manual on a 2006 a4 3.2l quattro? I am mostly worried about the tranny code. My automatic is HYK, but the manual version is a GYY. What do you all think? Let me know, because Im doing this soon. Thanks !

Your going to need to source a rear diff, a drive shaft (I believe), and I believe cv shafts. Well that's besides the obvious stuff like shifter, pedal and the likes. It's been done with the 2.0 or was that fwd to Quattro. Either way it might be worth looking up for some reference. There is some coding that needs to be done, I don't know what all that entitles to.
What ever makes sense go with the opposite and you got it

You want to do a transmission swap, and you are most concerned with three letters?

lol You should be more concerned about the outrageous expense it will be, or about the time it will take to do, or the sweat that it will take if you are doing this in your garage.

Its a lot of work! You also need a harness to the ECU which connects to the rest of the engine, so in effect you need a whole new engine harness from a manual car. pedals, shifter, new trim, recode the ecu. it is a ton of work.

Not sure if its the same as 2.0ts but as far as i know the automatics have different crankshafts and you will have to work out how to fit your pilot bearing. Most people use the 2.8 pilot bearing and install it backwards.

These cars are not rare or expensive at this point, I think you would probably be further ahead to sell your car and just buy a manual unless you happen to have a totaled b7 manual just sitting there and a bunch of time to kill. What is a decent manual b7 going for these days 8-9k or less. I wouldn't be surprised if you have 3k or more wrapped up in the swap, and it will probably drop the value of the car to some degree.

Expenses is not true if you know where to look for a transmission. First of all, I would sell my automatic transmission because it only has 73k miles on it. Then with that $$$ I will buy all the necessary parts INCLUDING transmission. I found a manual with 80k miles for $625. Yes, parts can be expensive, but that is if you don't know where to look. Also, I have some friends that own a car shop, and they have a lift, so the swapping is not a big deal. Throw in a couple hundred for labor and there won't be any sweating work for me.

    Lol yeah ok.

Let me put it this way.

Tranny is $600 on the cheap end. Clutch is $700ish, I am assuming you are replacing it and not reusing an old clutch that will need replacing in 30k. You need pedals which will cost 200-300, you need the trim around the shifter, you need the shifter, you need axles, let's say $600 on the cheap end for all that. Now you also need a manual wiring harness, $150 if you get lucky, ok, now you need to pull the engine and tranny, remove all the old wiring, install the new wiring recode the Ecu, take apart the trans tunnel and put your shifter in place, align it, flash the Ecu so it knows it is manual now, alright, now you need fluid for the tranny which is 50-70, and coolant to refill the engine that you just pulled, so now another $20 for coolant.

    Easily $2500 right there.

Ok now labor, you said you don't want to pt any sweat equity in so consider the average shop charges $700 for r&r for clutch replacement, but this also involves pull the engine, rewiring installing pedals and shifter, a regular shop is going to want 1700-2000, but you think you're friends will do it for $100 a piece?

A manual swap just doesn't even make sense, just sell the car and buy a manual, it will be cleaner that way, cheaper, and less trouble.

But hey if you don't believe me go ahead and jump into it and come let me know in 6 months how it was too tough, or hit some electrical gremlins that you can work around.

We did a 6MT swap on my friend's allroad. The total was under $1,800, including the full JHM rebuild kit for the transmission and a new stock clutch. Just need to be smart when shopping for the parts.

Only wiring required is the clutch switch and reverse switch.

Well, if you know some people, and if you know where to get cheaper parts (i didnt say cheap quality), you'll be fine. My estimate was 1k under what mec suggested

Thanks for telling me the steps, i appreciate it. I appreciate your calculations too, but I know where to get good-quality parts for cheaper than that.

Why would you buy a 200hp 2.0L Audi A4 if your goal was to have a lot of power?

I use that website. Parts arent that cheap. If thats your primary source. Buying pieces to do this swap will add up quickly imo

Transmissions and bigger parts of a vehicle is cheapest on this website. I get smaller parts like filters and stuff from elsewhere. If you know where to find em', youre good.

    OP has a 3.2

You can't easily do it with the 2.0T as the crankshaft is different.

Well I am pretty much going to do it based off this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJPecRXTmro

I will obviously get help from my mechanic friends on how to do it. But yeah, once I do it, I can explain it.

Listen to what? All he said was he would sell this car and buy a manual. Also, his pricing is a little bit too high, especially for the prices I can get my parts for.

Post links to everything you're getting and you're plan to go about this. I can promise you're missing a lot.
