I suspect that the two seals in the mid-housing between the central diff and the transmission have failed. It looks like there is ATF is in the gear lube, and ATF is leaking out of a small hole in the side of the mid-housing (see pic). So I am going to be replacing the seals, and hopefully have no more leaks. Last night I drained all the fluids, disconnected the drive shaft, and loosened all the bolts that hold the central diff housing onto the mid housing. Today or tomorrow I am going to be removing the central diff housing, and the internals, then removing the mid-housing to replace the seals. Has anyone ever done a job like this? Or is anyone familiar with the disassembly of the rear end of the transmission? I'm sure I will figure it out and learn as I go, but I just dont really know what to expect. I watched this disassembly video from wolf auto parts and it looks like the torsen diff from the central diff and then the gears in the mid housing just fall out? Or are just put in place without bolts?
The two internal seals i suspect are leaking have been ordered, should be here tomorrow (P#: 01v 409 400a and 01v 409 400b). Is there any other seals or anything that should be replaced, that im not aware of while opening this area up?
As of this point, I already have the 2 new paper gaskets. One for between the tranny and the mid-housing, then another for between the mid-housing and the cental diff. Ive read that it is good to coat the housing mating surfaces with ATF before installing the new paper gaskets. Is this correct? Or should I just install the new paper gaskets on a dry clean surface?
I appreciate any info anyone can supply me before I take on this job. Thanks for your time.
