    SD card issues

So recently the ipod connection stopped working in my RS4. It has the RNS-E head unit. Figured I would try the SD card to see if that worked, so I borrowed a full one from a buddy and gave it a shot. I inserted it into the #1 slot and it said loading. I figured maybe it takes a bit to download it however after a few minutes it came up saying "slot empty" or something like that. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated!

Not doing anything wrong. Sounds like it's not functioning properly.

Ahh yes, the proper SD cards...I bought mine from Amazon years ago and still use the same cards today. Forgot about that.

Yup, I went through the same thing. Tried it all cards, and 2GD SD is what works, i have 2 of them and Honestly I like it better than the Ipod since it displays song titles.

So long as it's an SD card and not an SDHC or SDXC it will work - even the (very rare) 4GB SD cards work.

Thanks for the replies fellas! How many songs do you figure you can get onto a 2 GB sd card?

At 320kbps the average song is between 5 & 10MB, plus the RNS-E has a limit of 512 files plus folders on any SD card.

Nope. Worked when I parked the car in the garage for the evening and the next morning did nothing. Still shows the CD 6 and the song numbers but it just sits at 0:00 and wont play. I can hit the forward arrow and it will go to song 2 but again will just stay at 0:00. Wiggled the Ipod on the connection and tried a different Ipod and nothing. Not sure whats going on!

I've got a spare SD card I can give you next time I see you. It's full of Tribe Called Quest albums, so hopefully you like hip hop!

If I organize my albums by folder on an SD card, can I browse by album/folder or does it just show all the songs on one big playlist?

You can organize by album/folder and browse. Admittedly, I am new to this system, I do have a frequent issue with missing songs. E.g., I'll put A$AP in a folder and Goldie will be missing but all other songs will be there. My trick has been to use an mp3 converter to convert all the songs into the same format, which also gives you the option to compress the bit rate if you want.

Does anyone know if there is a way to browse the card without the screen quickly reverting to what is now playing? Every time I want to find a new song and have to take my hand away for more than a few seconds, it reverts back to what is now playing and I have to start the search process over.

The pathname (i.e. folder name plus file name) must be no more than 64 characters, otherwise the RNS-E won't see the song.

What's the character after the "p" in the filename? Some RNS-E firmware versions don't like various non-alphanumeric characters.

Thanks Jimmy. Good info. I know this has been discussed at length elsewhere, but I'm finding that the RNS-E really isn't fitting my needs. I have aftermarket head units in my other vehicles and I'm used to being able to play music from my phone via bluetooth. So convenient. I need someway on the RNS-E to play from a decent sized library. I'm gonna try the sd cards for a while then maybe ditch the CD Changer for the aux input or more likely just swap out my RNS-E for something new. Hesitant to lose the OEM look though :(

Hi Dave, I was searching for one of your older posts about how to get the song names to show up properly using a program but I can't find it. Can you point me in that direction or share here what you use so that all the song data shows up properly on the SD card. I have the 2010+ RNS-E as well so I can use the dual 32GB sdhc cards.

    Malv,
You need a program that edits id3 tags. You can do it in itunes or download one of many others. Some even automatically scan all your mp3s and edit the tags for you. Here is one on CNET that got decent editor reviews http://m.download.cnet.com/tagscanne...-10056506.html

Actually the songs that show up with a "p" dont always even have a "p" in their name.

    For instance:

File name: Jimi Hendrix - Mojo Man
    RNSE displays: p

Check the whole path name (i.e. folder name plus file name for length and non-alphanumeric characters.

I used to use Playlist Creator 3 from OddGravity http://www.oddgravity.de/app-opc.php (since I fitted AMI I rarely use SD cards).

Here's an example of the .m3u files it produces:

I found that you need to be careful about the Walmart cards - bought two different sets that were labeled to be the right (old) format - and they turned out to be SDHD cards in crappy packaging.

these 4gb cards work great and only $13.
