The IS was my first car and I have no background or experience with tuning.
Not sure if this is something that's safe? I assume it's just tricking the computer to make the turbo work harder, and burn more fuel?
Theoretically, that's the biggest question for a tuning box. MTM/ABT come in at hefty price, in ABT's case because of a limited warranty they provide. The fact that MTM opted to use a tuning box for this car made me a little more comfortable with the idea. The tuning boxes that I've seen provide some more modest power increases compared to the APR (EU release) and REVO flashes, so that might be how they stay on the safe side. As ndk pointed out, they are still posting some impressive results.
Because the tuning box routes around some of the vehicles safety mechanisms (ex. limp mode), I think it comes down to trust in the vendor. Obviously companies like MTM and ABT will stand behind their product - but I'm still new to names like DTUK. I spent a lot of time researching the DTUK, and the UK guys have been testing the crap out of it for quite some time with no issues. I spoke with Andrew from DTUK over the last week and I finally opted to pick one up - got it for 365GBP. Came out to $545 USD.
I might put 1k down before I install.
