    Accidentally put oil in coolant

Our 08 2.0 Audi’s low oil warning display came on and then my daughter accidentally put oil (1/4 quart) in the coolant reservoir and drove it for a week like that (about 200 miles).

Anybody ever have to deal with this? Should I do a CLR flush or maybe fill with a little dawn dish soap and distilled water and run it for 30 min. Then drain, fill and repeat the cycle 2-3 more times before filling with G13?

By the way the car does drive fine, and the G13 coolant still looks pink, but I put my finger in the coolant reservoir and it was definitely oily. I’m mostly concerned about my new o-rings as I just recently replaced the coolant flange and heater hoses too.

Drain the entire coolant. Just add about 1 ounce of dish soap along with distilled water and drain the cooling system twice. Fill with 50/50 g12 or g13 coolant, distilled water. You should be good

Thanks for the advice. Dawn dish soap got rid of the oil residue.

Not exactly a great combo. Typically I don't suggest putting anything in a coolant system outside of water, coolant, and maybe Waterwetter. I'd go with drain and flush with water over and over and over again until it's coming out very clean, then add the proper coolant to water mix.

If the dawn worked great, but make sure you get all of that fully cleared out of the system, the cooling system has some very tight passages that see very high temperatures, any leftover soap could cause lots of issues in those passages.

I flushed it a good 6-7 times with distilled water and finally got it to the point where I wasn’t feeling any oil residue in the water. Then I added roughly a gallon of G13 since you only drain about that much from the radiator at a time and by the end it was already full of nothing but distilled water. Hence there was no need to mix it.

Parts guys will probably sell you the coolant hoses and same dish soap with different name and hefty price tag to make you feel safe. Our fear is their cash cow.

Mechanics and many dealerships get rid of oil from coolant with soap water after head gasket failures. As the entire soap and oil residue is gone, there is nothing to fear about.
