Summer Tires

Hello
i know it might be to early for this but spring is coming up soon and i need new tires for the summer so i have been looking into some new tires and not sure which ones to go with. the list are the ones i was looking at getting not sure which ones are the best or if anyone has a better suggestion it would be really helpful.
I didn't really like the stock pirellis that come on my rs5

I don't have any experience with Kumhos, so i can't speak to that brand.

I had Hankook Ventus V12's on my old B6 S4 and i hated them. They felt harder than what the UTQC rating of 280 indicates. They also had less traction on dry roads than what i was expecting. I would recommend you steer away from them.

The Michelin Pilot SS tires are some of the best, try them once and you'll know why. I have nothing bad to say about them. They would be my #1 choice.

I've heard good things about the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT tires, but have no personal experience with them. They would be my number 2 choice at this point.

IIRC, the PSS are pretty good in rain/wet conditions. The real question is - is there supply for our wheel size(stock 20s)? Last I heard they were on backorder.

Michellin and Kumho are the surest and most predictable from my experience.
Of course any tire will suffer if its overheated or not properly inflated.

I use the Pirelli all season. They rode much better than the oem Pirelli summer. They also provide much more dry grip than a standard all season. The case runs true and is not tapered in like say continental dws. Plus they last longer than a summer tire.

I run the Michelin PSS, but in 19" I prefer the forged OEM wheels. The are a great tire, no complaints on wet traction or dry.

Great price although they are from a 2011 production run. Hopefully they are still somewhat soft and sticky.

I got the Hankooks due to the availability in the size I needed (275/30ZR-20) and couldn't beat the price. $223 per tire right now at TireRack and comes highly rated. Just ask yourself, how are you driving most of the time and is it worth paying twice as much per tire? I drive down the highway most of the time and when I am not, I drive fairly aggresively, but nothing that the Hankooks can't handle.

I just ordered Yoko S.drives as my OEM Pirellis are almost bald. And they were dog shit to begin with . As an aside my Dunlop M3 winters are amazing (same 275/30/20) when comparing comfort, noise, and wear.

After reading everywhere, and as commented above, nobody has ever said a negative thing about the PSS - but they are like hen's teeth now and what I would have bought. My choice after PSS was Yoko or Toyo T1R - reviews seemed to be similar with maybe better performance but more noise and worse wear with the Toyo - so I went with Yoko. I also saved about $500 on the set which cemented my decision.

In the end it sounds like there's PSS then everything else. And we missed out on the PSS. There are mixed reviews on every other brand and you just have to try and guess which brand will work with your driving style, budget, and expectations. I'm sure it will be too late but I'll try and post some meaningful feedback on the Yokos in a couple months.

Getting my third set of P Zeros put on this week. I like them here in the mostly dry, mild climate NorCal. Would only replace them with a set of PSS, but they've been backordered already when I put on the current set. Looked at other alternatives, but they are all rated lower in the areas that matter to me (cornering and steering response) and/or are heavier than the P Zero.

let me know how you like those tires because i have had a bad experience with yokohama tires. i still have my winter set on and have some time before i have to put the summer set on which i barely have any tread life on them.

+1 on the Michelin PSS. Ran them on my S6 and now on my S5. 275/30/20 seems to be long gone but 285/30/20 might be easier to get.

I'm so glad I got a set of PSS' at discount tire... They were on 3+ month back order last year when I damaged the stock Pirellis.

I've been running Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s, then Pilot Super Sports on my 2008 A4 3.2 6MT then on my 2010 S5 4.2 6MT.
The A4 was my first track car until I outgrew it and moved to the S5 (now what am I going to move to?)
I ran 245/35/19x8.5 on the A4 and 275/35/19x9.5 on the S5.
I absolutely loved the PS2s and when the PSSs came out, I bought them for the new formulation. My PSSs are the first generation PSSs.
Recall that the PSSs went out of production and came back into production after a hiatus of what, nearly a year?

I can't say for sure if what I'm calling the 2nd generation are the same as the first generation but as someone who fully intends to wear out a set
of summer tires every 4 years (I do 3-5 track events each summer, including an open lapping day, so I can put on about 1000 track miles each summer)

The PS2s were a stretch to make it 4 summers, and so far the PSSs look like I'll have to abuse them harder to wear them out in 4 summers.
I did like the PS2s better in certain circumstances, but the PSSs tend to not get as greasy when heated up on the track.
Wet performance is a bit better in the PSSs also.

I think the PS2s were better colder and because of that were sticker in normal street driving than PSSs, but when the PS2s got hot at the track they
got a bit more greasy and I melted the rubber off of them at some of the high heat summer track events.

My philosophy with tires is that you should buy the absolute best tire that is on the market because it is cheap insurance against bent metal in the event
that you have to *really* rely on them to avoid an accident situation.

I only have a couple hundred km on the S.Drives, but so far night and day improvement versus the priellis with comfort and road noise. The turn in feels slightly less sharp, but equal cornering grip. However, I have found these qualities nearly every time I've put a new summer tire on, and time will tell over the summer if they change. One thing is for certain, the sidewall profile and tread design look far better than the pirelli - they look downright sexy on the wheel. Sidewall appears more square despite same 275 width and tread pattern is just aggressive enough. I know performance is key, but I appreciate a good looking tire. I'll throw a pic on later after I wash it.
