Fuel Pump. Cannot get it out......

I've looked all over, found many DYI guides and what not. For the life of me I cannot get the thing to turn counter clockwise to lift out......am I simply over looking something? I busted a piece off I tried so hard. In all the videos and guides they don't have this problem....I have the new OEM pump sitting in the car waiting to be installed and I cannot get the old one out!!!

Mine was a real bastard too.

I think I ended up using a 2x4 and pushed really hard on one of the tabs

I have the metal ring off, it's all disconnected. It's the actual pump itself. It just will not come out. I feel if I apply anymore force, I'm going to have to drop the tank and replace more than just the pump.

"It only takes a little effort to move the fuel pump. Once the fuel pump rotates counter-clockwise (about a centimeter) it can then be lifted straight out and removed from the vehicle"

Little effort my ass. It's like the damn thing is one with the basket!!!

If this is for a 1.8T FWD, you should pick up the pump out of the tank as far as you can, and unclip that hose/tube from the body of the pump assembly (on top) first and remove it. Then, then you should be able to pull the pump assembly. Install reverse of removal.

Mine was a bastard, too. It certainly took more force and effort than the DIY implies.

Using the "two screwdriver trick" worked for me.

I had the same problem, ended up buying the removal tool, still took quite a bit of force even with a 1/2'' drive. When you install the new one remember that it only goes in one way, the 3 lock tabs are not evenly spaced apart, also the little green/black tube has to go back into the small eyelet slot, its easiest to do with the cap almost closed, its pretty flexible so you don't have to worry about it breaking off.

I wasted about two hours trying to fit the damn pump on incorrectly, until I stopped and took a careful look and realized that it would only fit one way, as you indicated. Hopefully, someone finds this thread before trying it using that DIY. They will be better prepared than I was.

This is all info that I would have loved before hand. At least now it's out there! As I couldn't find anything.....Lol. I did use the screw driver with a hammer trick, however, it took enough force that it busted up the old pump pretty good before it finally came loose.
