    Burning Oil

    Alright guys here is my first post.

    Recently bought a 07 a4 1.8t quattro 5 speed with some upgrades. ATP Stage 3 exhaust manifold, aftermarket turbo, BOV, MBC, and FMIC. Still checking everything out to find what exactly has been upgraded.

    Heres my problem. The ICM went out after a few days of steady rain. Where the PO had it mounted it was hanging too low and was getting wet everytime I drove through a puddle. So this caused a no start condition and the car sat for a few days while I waited for the new ICM to arrive. Well yesterday the ICM showed up and I swapped out the faulty one. The car is running great now. Apparently the hesitation I was feeling was partially do to the ICM failing. Anyway after swapping out the bad ICM I took it for a test drive. Now there is a little smoke on startup but that disappears quickly. The problem occurs when down shifting while coming to a stop, there is a extremely large amount of what appears to be oil smoke coming from the tailpipe. This only happens when down shifting. No smoke under load or cruising. There was no smoke before I swapped the ICM. I know the two things aren't related. Its the weirdest thing. Are my seals bad? Is oil collecting in the turbo somewhere? This is my first turbo car and I am trying to clean up the hack job the PO did in this engine bay. Any help would be appreciated.

    Could be worn valve stem seals;
    1) burning at cold start because they haven't "swollen" yet due to lack of oil lubrication from sitting
    2) burning on decel due to high vacuum and loose clearances between seals/valves

    Maybe wait it out a bit and see if this changes.
    FWIW I'm planning to change out my valve stem seals at some point.

    Yeah I was thinking that might be an issue, but the previous owner swears he had the engine rebuilt 5-6k miles ago. I am still waiting for a confirmation of this as he has failed to provide any receipts to prove this claim.
