I got a code the other day P0171--lean code. I cleared it and it hasnt come back. Problem is its running very rough, sort of chug a lug, chug a lug. I've got oil coming from cap. When I pull the oil fill cap---it suctions a bit and then really runs like garbage. I checked the hPFP 2 weeks ago and unfortunately found a blown cam follower and slightly scored cam lobe. I replaced the cam follower with new and was going to drive it for 1000 miles and check the follower. If I cant get 5K out of it, then I will replace the camshaft and whatnot. I put that C shaped plastic hose that fits into the PCV valve on--but could it be that I put that on backwards and that is what is causing the code? It looked like both sides looked the same...........

Or is it likely a bad PCV valve? It was replaced by Audi under warranty about 5-7k miles ago. Could it have gone out that quickly.
I would just buy a new one and replace it, but I think I am just going to take into Audi because I think it has all the fingerprints of a bad PCV valve and if so, they'll waive the diagnostic fee and the cost for a new PCV.
Does that sound like the likely cause? Bad PCV?

The suction and running like shit is what mine did when the pcv failed. I would make them replace it or buy a catch can and never worry about it again.

Well I am going to go in and pay them they $110 diag fee and hope its a PCV valve---although its only like 5k miles old.
Can that plastic hose that goes to it (the one you need to pull to check the HPFP) be reversed and result in bad function or does it matter---both ends look the same.
