Yesterday I took a day trip to north New Jersey from Virginia, about 4 hours each way. Once on the highway, the car maintained an average (on the computer, I know) of over 26 MPG, at about 73 MPH, maintained by the RADAR-assisted cruise.
That's a big drop from my Jetta Sportwagen TDi, which gets almost 49 MPG on the same trip. But it seemed pretty impressive to me for a 420 HP+ over 4000 lb, AWD lux mobile.
Great trip until Maryland on I-95S, where two of their state troopers hung around the car in what they thought was my blind spot, ran up on me aggressively, and pointed blinding searchlights into the car presumably to get a better look at me: harassment for no apparent reason.
But I was still pretty happy- the car ran rock solid, and the highway mileage was better than I expected. I'm sure it would be better at 65.
I knew the S6 was fast, luxurious and a great place to be when you have a long trip to make. But I was surprised it was so economical.
