Cool Just traded my S4 for a 2015 RS5 (was also considering M4)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Before buying anything, I did some crazy research; and everything was pretty much pointing to the M4. Everyone and their grandma is raving about the M4 and how amazing it is.

You know what? I test drove the M4, and it wasn't that great. I didn't like how busy the console was, and it just didn't feel right. Maybe I'm just used to the way Audis drive.

So shortly after test driving the M4, I went to test drive the RS5, which I instantly fell in love with. I honestly don't know how all these ridiculous articles can talk so badly about it, and infinitely praise the M4. To me, they felt completely different - the RS5 just felt more refined.

Anyways, those are just my thoughts. I'm never going by stupid articles again - they are all very subjective, bias, and/or just paid off. I literally went into the RS5 drive thinking it was going to be crap, just based on all the negative comparison reviews with the M4.

Welcome to the club! I did my magazine, youtube, and review research as well, but what all of those fail to mention is the cheapness of the BMW's finish, the cabin volume level, and the fact that it is almost purely a sunshine car. In the end, I think you (and I) made the right choice!

Glad you didn't get sucked into the S5 vs RS5 conversations, too. If you got it, get it.

Good for you. I had a 2011 m3. The bmw drives a lot stiffer or artificial. The rs5 is a much better car. Maybe it's a 1/10 or 2 slower in performance figures. But overall it's a much better car. Good luck.

Congratulations. I personally love the understated power and beauty of the RS5.

As my other friend will say it... It does not exist until we see the pictures. Tell us more about your new RS5 please

The best way to find out what you like is to physically see and drive it. It's hard to determine what you'll like more just based off numbers and pictures. You have to actually get in there and feel it!

For me, the new M's weren't even in the picture. Yeah they're fast, but in my opinion the current gen looks and sounds like crap. I wanted something that makes me smile every time I look at it, and the RS5 was it for me!

Edit: And congrats on your purchase!

    Congrats on the new ride!

I have always wanted an M3. Even almost put an order in on an M4.

Then I drove an M3 back to back with and S5, and it was easy. The M was less refined, louder in the interior, felt cheaper, rode much harsher, felt and looked smaller and cramped, cheaper interior, and basically, felt like a "younger" persons car, not as sophisticated.

Doubt I'll ever get an M, even though they may have slightly better performance numbers. Not worth it on my daily drive of bumper to bumper interstate traffic when I can barely break the speed limit.

    Congrats on the new RS5!

Yeah, exactly - test driving them is the best. I had a hard time convincing Audi to let me test drive it though. They wanted an almost guaranteed sale before they let anyone drive it, because it was in the showroom, and they tend to sell fast here.

They were telling me that most people blind buy them (without test driving).

Spot on. BMW interiors do nothing for me and the exterior is too busy. Not a bad looking car, but I don't think it will age as well as the 5.

That's exactly what happened 7 yr ago when I headed into my local Audi to test drive the S5 and they refused to unless I place an order. So I went to the next door and traded in my E46 for a E92 335i instead! What a big mistake I made in my life! So 2 yr ago, I went to the same Audi dealer and asked to test drive the B8.5 S5 again. This time the salesman just though me the key to test drive it along. I was impressed on how smooth the supercharge V6 but still feel missing something when compare driving my 335i. I still placed an order on one because my wife sicked of driving the RWD in winter. The first week after took delivery of the S5, I still think 335i is better but more & more switch my ass between the S5 & 335, the refinement of Audi really planted into my head! Now I dun even want to sit behind the wheel on any BMW even though they may have slightly better performance, steering feel, handling & braking. The marginal advantage on BMW never able to offset the refinement & confident on quattro of driving an Audi. So my another big mistake on my life is keeping the 335 instead of trade it in for the S5.

Yeah, that's pretty extreme. I had a problem years ago, where I had the Audi dealership in Florida treating me pretty bad. So, I went to BMW and got a 335d, which I loved. Eventually I got an S4, which I loved even more; and that's when I became hooked with Audi - just an amazing ride.

Personally, I really like the new M4. Previously, I had an M3, M Coupe, 335xi and TT RS. I just traded in the TT RS for an RS5. I too read magazine article after magazine article about the superiority of the M4 over the RS5. However, I was also seriously considering the Nissan GT-R (until I took an extended test drive) and Boxster S. The magazines were good for picking up on reoccuring strengths and weaknesses of each model. In the end, most of the weaknesses of the RS5 did not apply to my intended use of the vehicle or were much lower on the scale of importance. I am looking out of my office window and watching the snow come down, again. I am glad that I did not need to drive my four wheel drive pickup truck to see clients today just because the weather might turn bad today. I have snow tires on my RS5 and know that I won't have any problem getting home tonight. As much as I like the M4 (and Boxster), I am really glad that I did not let the mags convince me that the RS5 is an inferior vehicle.

    Just traded my S4 for a 2015 RS5 (was also considering M4)

I was seriously considering a '15 M3, just to get 4 doors. I was hoping it would have a better ride over our lousy roads and it didn't, even with the adjustable suspension. Then.. I was outside and heard the exhaust of a '15 M3 as it pulled away at full throttle from the dealership... it sounded like a civic with a cheap muffler..

Got an RS5 and will keep it for a while.. The only thing I'd consider trading it for is a '16 S6 if I ever need 4 doors. But for now.. I'm happy with the RS.

Fixed the images in the above post, and here they are again. I guess Google Drive changes their image links often, so that people can't host them like this. I ended up just using the gallery on the forum here.

Very nice ride. Good choice on black wheels instead of titanium for daytona.

Nice color choice. If it were me I'd go for this or the Sepang Blue.

Don't care what other people may do, but if I can't make a test-drive before forking over a boatload of money I will walk right out the door to another dealer. Even if that means one far away.

I agree, I would never buy a car without driving it. Dealers in WI were playing that game with the S6 and RS5, even used ones.

The whole "people usually buy this car sight unseen" tactic at the dealer is just bull shit. Maybe Scotty Stortch type characters would do this but for the majority of people fortunate enough to afford these expensive cars I'd hope they'd have the patience and intelligence to know that their money is being applied to something that they are confident in... right?
