Turbo went out today, need replacement asap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So this morning I started my car, and as I was scraping ice off my windows, it began to blow clouds of smoke. I shut it down and drove my dads truck to work. After work I started it up again and same thing. I drove it between our two driveways and the turbo was making a nasty whine and I was leaving quite a cloud behind me. I jacked the car up, there is oil dripping from the exhaust clamp furthest back. I pulled the plugs, all are dry and look good. I pulled the turbo and there is a ton of shaft play, more than 1mm in and out, and about 1mm side to side. Time for a new turbo. I want to order tonight so it can be mailed out tomorrow. I borrowed my brothers spare car for the time being.

I see europa has new factory k03's for $999 shipped, and they have them in stock.

    http://www.europaparts.com/turbocharger-06d145701j.html

I am not opposed to something larger, but this is my daily, I already have a race car and reliability takes priority here. Stock fitment is a must. I think 1k is pretty reasonable for a new turbo, but I thought I would see if anyone knew of a better deal before I buy, or anything else I should consider? Does anybody know anyone who just sells the factory chra's online? Thanks

I would look for a low mile used turbo. Or you can send your turbo in to be rebuilt and balanced. I have heard good things about www.gpopshop.com

I'd hit eBay and just get a direct replacement and call it a day.

If I recall it's a journal bearing turbo and a rebuild kit is under $100. If you didn't explode the impeller or damage the housing, I'd rebuild it, turn some wrenches (which you already some comfortable with) and save $900.

Biggest thing would be to get tit rebalanced after everything checks out and is rebuilt.

If I didn't need the car I would send it out for a rebuild. I'd really like to have my car back this weekend. I wouldn't be opposed to rebuilding it myself, but I would like to have it balanced if I did and doing that locally in a timely manner is going to be an issue.

If anyone knows of a low mileage k03 around for sale, let me know. All the ones I see on ebay right now say they have slight shaft play.

My car currently has 107k on it, it has never been tuned, and it is always warmed up and cooled down. That's not to say another turbo would go out at that same mileage, but I'd rather not be swapping this out again in a year. At 76k, it would have to be a steal for me to consider buying. I'm thinking maybe I'll buy the europa turbo, and send mine out for rebuild, then sell it to someone else in my situation to recoup some of the money.

I have a turbo unit I removed from my car that was replaced at the dealer from PO with 40k on it. I would have loaned it to you until you could have goton yours rebuilt . I have it laying around just in case I need it

I wonder how common this is for these turbos to go out at 100k? I am at 70k right now and I have always warmed up my car also. Wonder if I need to start saving for a turbo myself!???

Anyone else have experience with this?

$990!!! Fuck that you can rebuild it yourself for $20 then get it balanced for another $50. Job is super simple. I know many many other things I could drop $1000 on that would benefit my car so much more then a shitty K03.

I have a whole page of maintenance procedures I have performed on the car. It's had mobil 1 0w-40 every 5k since I bought it, and I could probably count the times it's been revved beyond 5000 rpm on one hand. A guy I work with has a 2.0t passat, and he had to replace his turbo at like 70k, but it was under warranty. Still, this was probably just a fluke, but I see used turbos with 50k or more on them going for $300-$400. If I spend $100 on a rebuild, and get $400 out of it, then it's like I only spent $700 for a brand new turbo, plus it comes with a new diverter valve and n75. I would have liked to send it out for a rebuild, and if it was summer time I probably would have, but this is my primary means of transportation, and I live in a pretty rural area. I can't just walk to work, or the store. I need this taken care of, and I will have peace of mind knowing I have a brand new turbo under the hood. I debated a k04 or a k0r, but then I'll need fueling, and likely a clutch before too long, as it is the original as well, and at the end of it all, the car would still be slow.

    Thanks Hugh

Honestly, I think it's bad luck. These turbos are built for longevity. Our K03 had been improved from the older 1.8t K03. I'm about to strike 150k miles on my stock turbo. I've been tuned since before 80k miles. I've also adjusted my wastegate to improve lost response at around 90k-100k. I drive it like I stole it almost every day, still going strong. Still manage to hold 20 psi +. Seen spikes up to 24 psi as recent as the last couple weeks.

my honest opinion is to find one at a junkyard and pull the turbo and use that temporarily. Rebuild your current turbo when you get time hoping the junkyard turbo lasts long enough or permanently.

How far do you want to drive? If you're still in Clarion... well... there are junkyards nearby but found that car ^^ maybe there is a turbo left in it still

edit: while searching I also found an apr fuel pump for sale in pittsburgh: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/pts/4852318775.html

That makes sense. Also, makes sure you can get past 60 mph in 2nd for those 0-60 runs.

Turbo went out today, need replacement asap

In all seriousness I do think it's healthy for an engine to see WOT and redline on a regular basis. You want those heat cycles to really burn the crud off and get the oil pressure up.

Having said that I never redline my b7 due to its oil consumption and I rarely get my b6 to redline because it's so damn slow above 5000rpms. So what do I know.

Although I used to redline my g37 coupe all the time. That engine looooooved to rev. I was happy to oblige.

how much oil consumption are we talking? did you figure out the source? if so what adverse effect does the excessive revving have on the consumption?

    Just curious!

    Thx

The best way to not have to shift into fourth right before the traps is to shift into fourth well before the traps.
