    2015 Audi RS7 1,000 mile oil change

I decided to do a 1,000 mile oil change on my RS7 in the next few weeks when I reach the 1,000 mile mark.

The question now is, which motor oil to use...

I found a nice oil change kit on Europaparts which gives you a few options.

    Liqui Moly Synthoil 5w40
    Liqui Moly Leichlauf 5w40
    Pento High Performance II 5w40
    Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w40
    Motul 8100 X-ces 4w50
    Motul Specific 505.01 502.00 505.00 5w40

First question: Would you guys do a 0w40 or a 5w40? Mind you I live in NYC.

Second question: Which motor oil? I feel that the Motul Specific is the best option here since it meets the manufacturer's specifications and I have had great experience with Motul in the past.

I will also be taking a sample to do an analysis so I have a base line on the engine's health and performance. The next oil change will be at 5,000 miles as per Audi.

    Opinions?

I used Motul Specific on my S4 as my local Audi/VW specialist has that on tap. I did a lot of research back then and read good things. It's also on the VW/Audi oil list as an approved oil. I figured I didn't want non-approved oil to be questioned in any warranty issues. My invoices from that mechanic state Motul Specific 5W-40 on it.

Why? Isn't the first oil change at 5k interval there for a specific reason re: breaking-in of the engine components?

This would imply that the manufacturer is using special breaking in oil which i dont think is the case. 1000 miles is a good starting point and operating the engine to clean all deposits / savings from a brand new engine... I have done this on every car i have owned from new...

Defintely it is not harmful, maybe harmful in my pocket... But on a 100K plus car to spend a few extra dollars to me is worth it.

I think i will go with the Motul Specific since it is within the manufacturer's approved list... After this 1000 mile change, a 5K interval will be the norm...

With my Porsches even with track days and autox, i did not notice any deterioration of the oil at 5000 miles... Where on the other hand when i had my 600+ awhp EVO IX, 2500-3000 miles was the max interval for oil changes, but this was a highly tuned, built engine with different than the manufacturer specifications, clearances, etc etc...

I would make sure there is not a specific break in oil used. A lot car makers are using break in oil because of the tight tolerances used to assure the break in process is controlled.

Breaking in oil has a very specific purpose and in best case scenario you would run the motor for a few miles and then change it.

I have never read about a breaking in oil that can stay in the engine for 5000 miles before the first oil change.

In most cases on a brand new motor you would put breaking in oil, run the engine to temp for some time and then change it.

I always recommend people do a Blackstone oil analysis on these early oil changes (which I highly subscribe to). You will see a noticeable difference in various metals and other items suspended in the oil at a 1,000 or 2,500 oil change and then again on subsequent oil changes. After the first 2 the amounts suspended in the oil will settle down to normal.

I love that Audi recommends a early oil change when car companies like Mercedes do not. I think there is a good reason for this and it's never failed me over time.

One item we all should consider is how our engines are broken in. I apply a version of the moto man method utilizing negative compression on the rings. I think this helps set the rings better for longer engine life and less oil consumption over time. In the B8 S4 forum most folks who have oil burning issues did a gentle break-in.

I am definitely going to do a oil analysis. I already have the kit.

I was never a fan of the gentle break in method. I still remember my EVO where I went to Etown and made multiple passes within 80 miles since the build. And most of them where to drive to the track. Lol.

but I am excited to use the Blackstone analysis for the first time. I will definitely report the results.
