DIY: How to Upgrade or Replace Your Stock Fog Lights (Pre-Facelift B8 A4)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello everyone, I've seen this guide in various places around the internet except for B8 S4s, which really didn't help me, so here's a guide on how to replace/upgrade your stock fog lights. Perhaps I'll even inspire some of you to do this cheap and easy mod yourself. I did this on my "Pre-Facelift" B8 - it may or may not be the same on the B8.5 or S-Line models. Let it be known that the fog light assembly is also accessible through the fog light grilles, but I found this was the easiest way to do it on my particular car since those grilles are solid).

By the way, since this tutorial only applies to B8 A4s I'm posting it here.

First off, supplies (OEM lights are in the box since I took this picture after the installation).

    What you'll need:

    - A #25 Torx Bit and Bit Driver OR A T25 Screwdriver (shown above)

    - Replacement/Upgrade Fog Lights (I used Höen H11 55w Endurance: http://www.hoen-usa.com/fog.htm)

    Step 1:

You'll need to make sure your wheels are facing away from the side that you are working on. If they aren't already, turn them to face the opposite direction. Ex: If I'm working on the driver's side (US) I'll turn my wheels to the right (passenger side).

Ignore the dirty car (it's clean now anyways)!

    Step 2:

Now you'll need to unscrew the front of the wheel well liner via the two screws closest to the outside of your vehicle (kind of hard to see in my photo but I circled them so you should be able to figure it out).

    Step 3:

Pull back the liner to reveal the fog light assembly.

    Step 5:

On the driver's side (again, US), detach the cable from the bulb via the tab at the bottom (circled) and then rotate the bulb counter-clockwise and remove it. There will be a little rubber thingamajig in the way when you try to rotate it, so it will take a little bit of force/finagling to get out. You should not have this problem on the passenger side.

    Step 6:

Once the bulb has been removed (image 1) it's time to insert the new bulb (image 2). Insert the bulb and rotate it clockwise until it is facing down (Image 3). Again, the driver's side will take a little finagling to get around that little rubber thing.

    Step 7:

Re-attach the wire to the bottom of the new bulb. Once this is done screw the wheel well liner back into place. (Apologies for the blurry images - was using my phone and it forces a low shutter speed in low-light conditions).

Repeat Steps 1-7 for the passenger side (US)

    Step 8:

Get in your car and test those puppies out (press the button circled in image 1)! Proceed to stare at them for the next hour / drive around with them on for no reason.

Will try to get some night pictures either tonight or tomorrow night (it's snowing right now, however.)

The foglight grilles pop out from the bumper. Swapping the foglight bulbs takes about 5 minutes from the front of the car.

I know. Both ways are quite simple and quick regardless. Since the fog light grilles aren't open on mine like they are on some models, I found it was just easier to do it this way. I addressed this in the beginning of the post too, so that people would know there's not just one way of doing it.

The grilles come out the same way on all B8/B8.5 models, the design of the grille itself makes no difference. The foglight housing is held in with two T25 Torx screws.

Ah. How do you get it out? I tried pressing in on the tabs through the small openings in the fog grille with no avail.

It's easiest to do the inner tab (closest to the grille) first and then continue to pull outward on the grille. Then undoing the second tab, while still pulling on the grille so the first tab doesnt click back in. Should pop right out. There's also no real need to remove the fog light housing, you can just reach your hand back behind it and get at the bulb.

There's a small hole in the upper corner nearest the center grille. Stick an Allen wrench or something else angled in that hole and pull. The whole fog light grille pops out.
