So noticed some things reading the tech manual...

There is a sensor under the engine cover, middle left looking at the engine from the front, that monitors the ambient heat. If the ambient temps under the cover gets too hot all the fans come one to circulate air.
If oil temps get above 257 the ECU pulls back power. Maybe it was 256 or 259.
The PCV and oil separator is much different than the RS4s which had massive carbon issues. Although I am not sure having more drain holes in the oil separator that leads the heavier vapors back to the oil pan is going
to help that much. I can't imagine, well, yes I can, Audi ignoring the problem with CB and not doing anything about it.

I have had the car for over 3 months and I am not sure if I want to keep this thing long term. Days I love it and days I don't. I have always had a cheap daily with a fun toy car. I thought I might enjoy a hybrid of the two, thus the S6,
and not sure I like that. Not a knock against the car, it is pretty cool, but there is something missing about it that I cannot yet put my finger on it.

Anyhow, on a separate note a friend with a 2011 C63 AMG was talking to me about head bolts on those cars stretching and possibly breaking! Seems to be popping up more and more. I told him we can fly to Germany and google the name of Z German that signed his engine and go kick his ass for using the wrong type of head bolts!!!

    I know, useless post.

I love posts like these. Love the technical stuff.

Velodb. Do you have a S6?

I wouldn't worry much about the carbon build up. For the most part this is a thing of the past on DI engines from VAG.

Where did you get access to the tech manual?

In terms of "something missing", there will always be an inherent compromise when you ask one car to do lot of lot of varied things. Here you are combining premium luxury with high performance at a moderate price. The S6 does many things well. It isn't the best at anything, the B&O sound system not withstanding. That said, it presents us with a phenomenal modding platform. If your are willing to mod, you can really transform the car without breaking the bank. Of course, you can break the bank if you wish to.

I guess it is called the self study. I do own a S6. 2014 Black Optic package has alcantara headliner and driver assist. No HUD or Bang & Olufeson.

Interesting. I have the A6, and most days it is just fine and does exactly what I want; other days I think "maybe I should of had a V8!" But then again, I probably saved over $20K... but if I sell my fun toy car (which I will do next month, probably) then the money isn't the issue, but will I be happy with just one car?

    Oye.

I've ditched both cars and consolidated to one. (mostly because when we moved, our townhouse is only set up for 2 cars vs 3.

I have to say, other than needing to get snow shoes for next winter for sure, I am absolutely so happy. If i had spent more on the RS7 i think it would turn into a pseudo garage queen, and it's one less car to maintain.

@m j b - get the v8! i love the power it gives...i can't even imagine what it'll be like with an optimized tune via APR Stage 1

I was surprised at how much more powerful the S6 is over the A6 3.0t. The handling is also vastly superior to my old sports package A6. It would not have been worth the circa $20k plus difference brand new, but pre-owned or better yet, CPO, it's a no-brainer if you can find a low mileage model. My lesser equipped A6 stickered at something like $61k. In my search I could find sub-10k miles, very well loaded S6's in the $64-65k range, and CPO. Unless someone were absolutely stuck on getting a brand new car, if you're shopping for a S6, I can't imagine why someone wouldn't go with a lightly used S6. Hell, even my insurance was $6 less for the S6!

I was debating between an A6 with 20" sports package or S6 - aesthetically they look quite similar. However could not find a decent CPO S6 with decently low mileage for a reasonable price for me. Is getting an S6 worth the extra 15-20K? Yes, but I couldn't justify it and the power (right now) is fine for me. One day tho....

Amen to that! Picked up my CPO'd '14 with 4300 miles on it for $70K (original sticker $86,300)... got the 100K platinum $0 deductible wrap for another $3200. No brainer, as you said.

The car does so many things well, all while being just a "nice" enjoyable ride, I don't think I'll ever be happier with another car in this price range. Performance, comfort, luxury, audio system, styling, and the overall prestige of it... just an all around bad ass car that gets a TON of respect.

I myself have been on the fence about daily + fun car vs. 1 car combined. When I had the A7, I was considering A7 + Boxster vs. getting a new single car. Decided on the Porsche Macan. Recently, I once again considered keeping the Macan and getting a boxster vs. getting the new S6. Going for the "combined" car experience again, but there might be something unique about having a separate "fun car" that you can't get in in the combined scenario. For example, I really want a convertible as the "fun car" for the warmer months and can't have one as a DD. My S6 hasn't arrived yet, so hopefully I'm wrong and a combined car is the way to go, but I totally see your point. For me, the insurance costs of the extra car is what kills me. Here in the NYC-metro, insurance rates are very high.
