3.0T to 3.2 style airbox modification (Video + Supercharger wine inside)(Pic heavy)

As I have said to my local friends, I searched long, waited for, and purchased an Avant with a Supercharger, so gosh darn it I want to hear it!

For the most part, Since the B5 days, I have been highly happy with Audi's stock airbox setups. For the most part, they pull in enough air volume for basic tunes, and with light modifications they can do a little better with airflow, and the audio feedback that many of us enthusiasts enjoy. Since I ended up with a free 3.2 airbox from a friend, I decided to take a look at it, as compared to my own.

The overall sound change is noticeable. The Supercharger can actually be heard, but isn't overwhelming with the stock tune and pulley that I have now. I really like it, as I can enjoy the sound now, but it is stock quiet during normal cruising. The video really doesn't do it justice, as the Gopro Hero 4, iPhone 6 just don't pick it up, the only thing that really captures it is the chepo dash cam .

Stock 3.0t Airbox as the factory intended

Inside the stock 3.0T airbox. Note the plastic skeleton and sound foam

Inside the stock 3.2 Airbox bottom

5 screws hold in the foam skeleton, after which you can remove and store these items in the place of your choosing.

One interesting aspect of the 3.2 Airbox, is the built in auxiliary intake, that is opened by an electronically actuated vacuum switch. Sadly because the 3.0T requires Secondary Air (which the 3.2 doesn't have), I wasn't able to incorporate this into my build (for now). I am going to look into piping extra cool fresh air into this location inside the airbox at a later date. Since the shape is designed to have air come in from this location, I may as well provide more cold air later on :) .

3.2 intake tube installed, factory 3.0T pipe on top

The factory intake tube for the 3.2 is almost identical to ours inside the 3.0T. The biggest difference is the 3.2 has a bigger resonance chamber, and lacks an integral resonator / muffler inside the tube itself. Since I like induction noise, I ditched the factory 3.0T tube, and went with a 3.2 pipe with it's chamber removed and capped off. The ID on both the Airbox and throttle body side are identical.

Installed it looks nearly identical to stock, but isn't ;) . And sorry for the dirty car / engine bay. I clean her up come spring!!

    FWIW
I doubt this modification will make much difference in overall power output, however it may provide a touch more response if anything else. One thing that I DID notice, is the factory Foam sound material sits quite close to the factory air filter when it is in it's proper location. This has to restrict how much cold air can go into portions of the filter, so perhaps with the frame and foam removed, the 3.0T has a little bit better chance of flowing cold air across more of the filter. I also noticed quite a bit of black foam within the pleats of my older filter, which clearly was restricting airflow on it's own.

Sounds good and I applaud the effort, but still no replacement for the Roc-Euro whine!!

Not intended as an alternative, I am happy with the stock airbox, and it will likely be loud enough when I add the pulley, k&n, and. The extra intake tubing I intend to install come spring.

This is just a clean option for those looking for a little bit if SC Wine.

you could also remove the acoustic baffle plate from the top of the SC to get more whine?

I haven't looked into that. I just knew there was an option to open the airbox a little, and perhaps help get a little more air into the engine. I plan on piping in more cold air come spring.

Bringing back this old thread. What did you do to plug the hole to the resonance chamber? Just used a plastic weld type thing or? Cut of the nipple completely and glued on a piece of plastic?

    Thanks

I cut the plastic and capped it with a plastic grommet I had laying around from another project and did an RTV silicone seal on it. I need to pull the works soon to do a SC service and intake check so I can post a picture if needed.

    Cheers!

Good info! I'll be doing this sometime next week when the 3.2 intake tune and filter arrive for my newest addiction.

Can I still achieve supercharger whine if I upgrade to the aFe air filter, leave the bottom breather hose connected to the air intake box, and leave the vacuum hose connected to the throttle body hose?

    - - - Updated - - -

I already have a silicone throttle body hose but have yet to achieve that SC whine despite being stage 2

As long as you remove that sound insulation foam from inside the box, you might get more wine. I left everything else connected and just removed the foam and I have a little wine.

Thanks, hopefully that works. I already have the Silicone Hose from JHM. Is the aFe Dry air filter worth it?

Not sure what air filter that is.im still running OEM air filter as it's probably still the best quality one.

Just to get a little more SC whine I ordered the aFe Performance Air filter which allows 17% more air flow versus the stock OEM air filter. Will update here when I get the chance to install it over the weekend :) The resonator in the throttle body hose has contribution to canceling out the SC whine; therefore, if all you did was remove the foam insert and that generated a little bit of whine, that is promising.

Yes, foam insert in airbox + this 3.2 throttle body tube mod makes it sound a bit louder.

Awesome, that is great to hear. I'll be using JHM's silicone throttle body hose as it does not make sense for me to return it for a refund at this time. The rep at JHM advised me to leave all the connections (i.e. vacuum and SAI) in place though and that I would still be able to achieve a good amount of whine with a larger air filter (i.e. aNF high flow) and by removing the foam insert.

So I managed to fit in the aFe Wet High Flow Air Filter + JHM Throttle Body Hose + Removed Foam Insert from Air Filter Box, and was able to achieve substantial supercharger whine. Obviously whine is not consistent; it is more prominent when accelerating from a stop. The whine can't be heard much while you are cruising unless you are accelerate hard intermittently. Now, part of the Air Filter itself opens into the throttle body side, and the other side of the filter opens up into the SAI. Has anyone tried capping off the air filter on the SAI side, relocating the breather hose outside the air filter box and adding a separate breather filter to the SAI?
