Hmmm. I'm almost tempted to grab that baby in what would be a swap of my current B7 Avant. I do love the B6 Avant body style, and I've been thinking lately about whether I should have gone manual to begin with. I know the paint is cherry, but non-original paint should mean a lower price, not higher. Could probably nab this for a good deal less. Not a big fan of Moro either...

It would be fun to swap my current updates over from my B7 though, while I had both of them.

Is it really worth 20K (Dont know if the avants drive upthe price.)? I picked mine up for 20k back in october and it has 60,000 less miles.

    I see it this way:
basic S4 sedans with tip and 100k mi seem to be worth about $12k-$13k right now, depending on condition.
    +$1k for 6MT
    +$2k for avant
+$2k to +$5k if it's noggie; that's the real wildcard
+$0-1k for cabriolets; it don't really seem to add much value

The only other thing that adds value (or reduces it) is mileage. Maintenance, mods, navi, and whatever else don't really play into dollars and cents, though they may help sell the car a lot faster.

People tend to exaggerate a little bit by rounding up usually but with all the work done by someone else and paying full price for parts then I can see close to $30K invested.

surely having had the timing chains done has to add value somewhere in your equation

I would be wary of that car. I bought my S4 from that exact same shop with pretty much the same story (timing chains redone by the shop). Upon asking them what oil they put in the car, the shop owner told me "15w40 Valvoline non-synthetic. DO NOT use synthetic oil or it will break the timing guides." Uh...what?

I don't see a reason why a respray should reduce the price. If anything increase the value, unless it's a completely different color. New guides amd chains is a plus, especially on a b6. I would say the car should be priced more around the 15k range to an enthusiast. I couldn't see it getting much more than that.

I don't think 30k invested is over the top. Based on having a shop perform all the work listed:
5-7k for the timing chain depending on level performed
10k gets you a nice paint job
1k to supply coil overs + install, 400
4k for giant wheels, I paid 3200 for my 19" vmr set up
500 to supply interior things + install 250
And with some other odds and ends your pretty close to 30k

What I find odd is, who invests that amount and then shortly after sells while taking a huge loss. I would enjoy it for at least a couple thousand miles. His loss, someone else's gain I guess.

Pretty close to 30k? By my calculations your still short roughly 8k.

Also 10k for a paint job? Maybe if he got the engine bay etc. I'd say more like 2-5k depending on location.

Nice avant regardless--not worth 20k in my books--some may beg the difference...

Not really. To somebody here, on a forum, where at least some people know about the issue, it's worth maybe a couple grand. But remember that we Audi forum members are but a tiny fraction of the S4 ownership population, and an even more insignificant fraction of the general population. So most prospective buyers know NOTHING about that. We, the tiny fraction, have but a tiny fraction of the control over the price of these cars. But it's we who keep the prices relatively high on ultra low mileage examples, like the S4 with 25k miles from the other day.

It's like the stock market - you may KNOW that a stock is going up soon because the company is doing all sorts of great things for business. But the price is going down right NOW because everyone else just sees the latest news report about how China yada yada who cares not relevant, but people in large groups are stupid and fickle.

I know it is counterintuitive, but original paint on a car is worth significantly more than even the best paint job you could possibly get at the best body shop in the world. It's just how it works. IE: A crappy, cracked, but serviceable originally painted classic car is worth 10 times more, sometimes 100,000 times more, than a repainted classic, even all things being equal everywhere else. The same goes for contemporary cars, just to a lesser degree. Also, factory paint is superior in color correction and bonding properties, such as the additional ionic bonding between medium and paint possible at the factory but not in a typical body shop. It's pretty neat to see; you can spray the air in the opposite direction with the paint from the sprayer, and you will see the mist change direction midair and go to the panel being painted.

LOL. Automobiles are terrible investments unless you are talking rare classics.
