B8.5 - S4 HID fog install with Pictures

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I tried to find this link, but had no luck... It was all for B8's. I made one. Lots of pictures. Don't say I didn't contribute.

You need some tools... Just grab em. I hate describing what tools to use, so I won't be help there, but there are some pix.

I was able to just pry open the front fog light grill with a tiny pliars, so whatever you can jam in there, and pull will work. Plus, a star shape security bit, which I happen to have. That and small-ish zip ties. about 12 or so or more.
Took me about 20 min to install. I used Xentec, which I'm not liking at this moment, because I used it on my motorcycle and they were fine, but the color is more green than yellow for their 3k HID:

Pop the grill from fog light housing. Those galvanized screws underneath, get them out. You have to sorta wiggle the fog light housing a bit to get them out. Note. I'm in DC and this is 20 minutes after I washed my car, because weather sucks right now.

This is what it looks like when you pop it out, stick the fog lights. What you have to do is, stick the ballast inside the fog light housing, then pull it out to the left opening (for the right fog). Then stick your fog light in there.

For Xantec, you have to use the provided clip, because the clip doesn't work. See the + and - Mark on the original? Use the supplied wires, and put the positive + on the right side of the clip, where it has the little popped up clicker indent. It just sticks in.

The 3m ballast is pretty simple. I had a good spot on to post the ballast - you see that middle column? That's where I stuck it. Fits perfect and the grill don't have a clip for that middle part. Very open on the left side.

This is what it looks like after you put the 3k fog lights in

Make sure you turn it on to make sure it works before you start mounting things. Rookie mistake.

Now the right side - passenger side, is a lot more difficult, because of this big hunk of thing:

So, after you unbolt the fog light, see the small round hole in the right side? It has the white clip that the wire mounts to. Poke it with something to release it.

Then you can route the stock wires and zip tie it, so it's not going to touch that big thing.

Then you connect your wires, and make sure it's tight:

Then, you mount the ballast at the same place. Make sure nothing dangles because when you're driving they might make the most annoying noise ever. Just zip tie everything:

here is the right side done

    Both side done

Then pack up, clean up, and enjoy you lights. Here are some night snow pix:

    Only HID Fog

    Fog and headlight

    Fog only

The fog hid shapes are pretty awesome. cool wedge, like a knife. Lots of side coverage.

Turned out pretty green... was disappointed...

    With headlight on

The beam pattern is very defined:

    Little things:

    1. Pull from the grill outward toward the fender - They're really strong, so don't worry about it

    2. The grill doesn't line up 100% with the fog light. Drives me nuts, but that's how it is. There is a little gap

    3. Don't touch the bulb. Whatever you do, don't touch it. It'll blow out within 2 minutes if there are any oil on it or scratch. Wear plastic gloves.

    4. Took me 20 minutes. Easy to do.

The heat is very min. and no melting.

    The end.

I had xentec 5000k and 3000k HIDs in my fogs and I could have told you they are absolute shit. The colors of two bulbs did not match, and the color was a greenish yellow. The 5000k set was ok, but it was too blue for true 5000k and never matched the LED DRLs. The 3000K are almost highlighter yellow with too much green, like i ran over a fucking leprechaun or something. They were never close to the bright pure yellow I wanted.

I switched to Hoen endurance halogen bulbs and they look nice but not bright at all. Also after just 7 months one bulb burnt out, very disappointed.

Going back to HIDs now with DDMtuning's 3000k set. We'll see what happens, the price is cheap so I'm not expecting much.

I liked them a lot, no hid wiring bs and simple bulb and all. I would have kept them had the bulb not burned out so soon. I did use them a lot, idk.

my hoen's lasted for 4 years and two cars, and were still going strong. i just forgot to swap the bulbs before i traded my car in.
i think halogen bulbs have a leg up when going for the yellow look because well, halogens are natually yellower

It's yellow, but with green tint.

It was cheap, and it does really brighten the road up.

Probably just change the HID bulb.

The bulb turns green at first, then to yellow after a while. It might take some time for the bulb to adjust. I don't know. Let's see what happens. The ballast and everything else is good, well made parts. They all share the manufacturers, from my understanding.

There is also some burn in time with bulbs. E.g. my Phillips XV bulbs actually took about a week to settle in to their final color temperature

Just a quick follow up. The bulbs turned a lot more yellow, but still horrible bulbs. The left one went out already. The seller or the manufacturer won't warranty it. Garbage. But the ballast and the connectors mated well.

One other problem was the 3m sticker that came with it to stick the ballast onto the body of the car. They're utterly garbage. They came off within two weeks, and caused the ballast to move around a lot, which tugged on to the bulb, which caused multiple "fog light is out" warning sign in the dash.

But it was so cheap, and it worked, I can't complaint. I'd buy some 6k bulbs online, and good 3m tapes from home depot, and the problem should be fixed.

I did get a good comment tho on how they turn on. They turn on white, then blue, then green, then yellow, gradually, which looks pretty bad ass.

prob need to change the turn signals to LED white, because that three color deal looks crummy.

I had the same setup in the past, they turn on green but warm up to yellow same way most of those HIDs do. My question to you is did they stay on longer then 10 minutes without hitting the bulb out warning for you? That was my issue with them even with resistors attached to them same outcome. I have switched from the HIDs over to the Phillips bulbs for my fogs even though they are not as bright they are better then stock.

Has anyone had problems with the b8.5 foglight housing or lense melting from the heat the HID bulbs give off? I know the b8 S4 had this problem

Just for the record...I've had the Hoen's installed for going on 3+ years now. I use them religiously, what I mean by that, is I drive with my DRL's and fogs all the time unless its dark...I need to put the HID's on. Haven't had a problem yet...I'll knock on my fake wood that is next to me.

Just the update. I've noticed that there is a problem with the water getting in the bottom fog light hole. Might want to make sure everything is water proof, so you don't fry anything.

Also, make sure the bulb seal is tight, or reinforce it. There are a lot of junk that's now inside the fog lights.

H11 is same as H8 for HID. No melting, even though these are rated at 55w. But, I don't use it that extensively.

Update: I got some 55 watt 6000k. Totally don't match with the headlight, but they look great, and I actually like the 6000k better than the 5000k OEM headlight, led. I think this setup looks better with than the yellow.
