    How loud is your CLP?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So since the day I purchased my car, I noticed that I needed to either rebuild or purchase a new central locking pump. My door locks were extremely slow, sunroof would work intermittently, and I could hear it distinctly wining away whenever I locked/unlocked my doors.

I purchased a new pump from a Jetta from eBay for $25, (part #1H0 962 257 F) and went ahead to swap the motors/graphite disks while I was draining my oil today. Took apart my pump only to realize all my disks were in tact.. I only found an extremely small defect on the outside of one the disks and scraped off the extra graphite so it was smooth. I was shocked that all the parts were in tact so I re-assembled it.

After it was all plugged back in, I tested it and it was just as loud as it was before. I'm not sure, but I think my locks are quicker.. My driver's door lock is definitely quicker but all others seem the same. Tested out my sunroof and it was working properly.

One thing I noticed is that the graphite disks do not all line up perfectly, like on the jetta pump. The top disk appears to be more of an oval shape compared to the 2 under it

    B5 pump

Left: Jetta pump Right: B5 pump

Even after I put everything back together with the insulation and such, the pump is just as loud. Is it normal for the pump to be so loud? I'm not quite sure what else could be wrong. The vacuum tubes all seem fine because I can hear the pressure release from the pump after locking the car (while it was out of the insulation).

Mine is quiet enough that people continue to stare at the door handle after I've already unlocked it for them. They are expecting some big KA-DUNK like domestic power locks make, or something.

I'm like "get IN", and they give me the look that says Well, unlock the door and I might. So then I have to be more specific and tell them:

"Pull the Handle, this isn't Star Trek!". Then they proceed to open the door with this look of wonder and amazement.

"How did you?...But I was right here, and..."

    "The locks are silent."

"The locks are SILENT? How is that even possible?"

"Its German Engineering. Also, don't touch the cupholder. Or the sunroof. Or anything else."

"Wow. Is that a SEAT HEATER?!"

"It doesn't work on that side." <Turns knob back to zero> "Hey, don't...I said not to touch things." <Passenger pops open glove box and tries to force it open quickly> "Gah! Stop That!"

I forgot to even mention about the passenger putting 120% of their body weight on the armrest while fidgeting around in the seat and getting belted. <Cringe>

And then not helping the seat belt retract and letting it get closed in the door when they get out. <Facepalm>

Every time I get out, I do a double take while closing the door to check if the seatbelt retracted. But thanks

That armrest thing happens all the time with me, I'm honestly surprised it holds up seeing it flex like that. My '99.5 has the older style non dampened glovebox, so I always get "how the hell am I supposed to reach anything through this 2 inch crack? Your glovebox is stupid." Followed by "ow my knee, why does it open so suddenly?"

I like the vacuum locks, the soft whirr of the pump and quiet clicks of the actuators is oddly soothing. I've always wondered why so many people don't realize I've unlocked the doors, I guess I just know what to listen for.

What's weird is the sped of the actuator on my allroad is probably 2-3 times faster than my a4. But it's been that way for 5 years.

My seat belt used to take forever to retract, so I did a little searching about it and found that if you soak your seat belt in hot water (the hotter the better) mixed with laundry detergent for a few hours followed by a soak in plain hot water will get the dirt and grime out of the belt. I did that a few years ago, and it helped speed up the retracting quite a bit. I was impressed.

Also, when passengers try to open the console lid all wrong. If it didn't open with forceful pulling, then it probably doesn't open that way.

Really? I'm skeptical. It really feels like the spring is just worn out. But I guess cleaning my filthy seat belt can't be a bad thing either way.

It actually does help, no idea how but it works. I first read about it on BMW forums, tried it on my last car and it went from the seatbelt never fully retracting to fully retracting slowly.

Try it. I was skeptical too at first. You'll be surprised at all the gunk you get out of the seat belt.
